EDC/CCW: how many rounds do YOU carry?

15+1 +P JHP in my G19. I've gotten sloppy about carrying the extra mag though.

Depends on what I'm wearing. If I'm carrying a 9mm, I typically carry a double mag carrier on the off side that nicely balances the weight of the pistol. My EDC is a 3913LS (8+1), so that'd be 25 rounds on a typical day. When dress and climate permits, I sometimes carry a full-sized FNS 9mm (17+1) in the holster and carrier I use for USPSA (more accurate and better capacity), so that'd be 52 rounds. If dressed so lightly that a .32 ACP and one spare mag is all I can carry, that'd be 15 rounds (hard to find a double mag carrier for a .32 that is thin enough).

Keep in mind that there is no penalty for not using a spare magazine, or for leaving unfired rounds in a magazine.

Being a former LEO, you likely have more carry experience than I do. Further, you are probably more likely to assess situations for threats and determine whether or not certain behaviors are threatening. For me, having neither law enforcement or military experience, I find that what I carry depends on what I'm doing.

If I am going to the store late at night, and then am coming straight home, I typically only carry my Glock 19 with one 15 round mag. Everything I do on the way to the store and on the way home is predetermined, not out of paranoia, but because I am more of a "routine" kind of guy. In this case, I know that if I were to need my gun, I will not likely need more than the 15 rounds because I have many different options for flight, which I'm always going to choose over a fight of any kind.

If I'm traveling more than 15-20 miles, I usually pack an extra mag with me, but again, the same situation applies. I very rarely do anything that doesn't give me the flight option. I should mention, I'm not one of those fearful people that thinks everyone is out to get me, or that I can't hold my own if need be, I'm just smart enough to realize that engaging in any hostile situation, verbally or physically, is an easy way to end up in prison or dead. People don't know how to keep things from escalating anymore, but I digress.

If I am going anywhere with someone where I feel there is a possibility for the need of a gun, which I hate doing, then I carry my .45 with 2 extra mags. The .45 being somewhere between 3 and 5 O'clock and the mags being between 7 and 9. This happens very rarely though, the first protective measure against any kind of danger is avoid a situation that could put you in danger, which is what I lot often opt for.

When I'm hiking, I usually carry either my Glock 19 or, if the weather is poor, my Ruger SBH in 44 mag. During Spring and mating season, I carry the Ruger exclusively because an angry moose is nothing to mess around with, though I've never had an encounter, and I generally only worry about 2 legged predators.

I usually have a pistol of some sort, either the Glock or one of my 1911s in the car at all times. For longer distances, especially if going somewhere I've never been, and thus don't know the neighborhoods, I will also keep a 12 gauge loaded with 6 and another 5 in the saddle.

I have considered keeping an AR in the car in the past, but it's really hard to justify that logically and legally, should I actually need to shoot at anything.

As pictured in avatar: 1911 + spare magazine + pocket pistol option*
15 -17 rounds 45 acp (depending on magazines, typically 8 round) + 6 or 7 more in pocket option*.
Kahr PM9 holds total of 7 rounds, PM40 total of 6 rounds.
Total rounds somewhere between 21 and 24 depending on specific pistol / magazines.
*The option of hand in pocket on pistol if approached by someone "shady" looking in parking lot.
The pic represents carrying that combination all year, including 100+ heat index.
I've been carrying concealed 20+ years; I live in and travel to "good" ;) areas.

May I ask where you got those beautiful grips on that 1911?

I must have a backup magazine (in case primary fails). My Shield 9mm carries 8+1 with 8 as backup. 17 GoldDots for EDC.
If I feel I may face a breakdown of law and order such as a "Katrina situation" it's my XD-45 with 3x13 +1 of .45 HSTs.
If I know I face "without rule of law" situation it's an AR-15 and 4 x 30.

I carry a XDS 45 ,2 spare mags, a 22 magnum in my pocket every day all day.
If Im in the truck my AK Draco rides under the fold down console beside me. A 75 round drum under my seat and a fighting load carrier behind the seat with 10 more 30 round mags. Depending on time of year my Ruger single six ,magnum cylinder loaded with ratshot. It does well on snakes.
Remember spraying for bugs rids you of spiders, frogs, lizards and rids your house place of the snakes that feed on them.
All creatures will leave the area even humans go to the grocery store.

my primary carries 12+1, and usually the spare mag is one from the compact version so 15 rounds. Though I have gotten lazy about the spare mag. :(

I do not carry a gun because I don't need to. My all around gun is old G26. A ten or twelve mag inserted plus two 17 cartridge magazines on belt would seem logical. If I chose a revolver I would have to carry two revolvers because carrying extra ammo for one seems illogical.

I generally carry a Glock 22 and a pair of spare magazines. If not a Glock 22, then I am carrying a Glock 23 with a pair of spares. I am not carrying two spares because I believe I am going to be in a protracted gun battle with a horde of nefarious characters, though I do allow that the remote possibility exists. The main two reasons why I carry two full reloads is that the magazine is the weak link on any semiauto and redundancy against mechanical failure is never a bad thing. If a mag fails, strip it, rip it, slap in a new one and Happy Meal. BUT...the big reason why I carry a pair of spare magazines is that their weight balances the weight of the pistol on the other side and saves my back from an unequal distribution of load. For the same reason I balanced the load on my duty belt while I was an LEO, I do the same now...just with a lot less crap on my belt.

In the street I carry my 9 mm Shield with 8+1 and have a 7 rd mag on my other side. Around the house I'll carry my .38 cal Model 85 Ultra lite with 5 Rds. It's light and very easy to carry in my pocket holster, hardly know I have it on me.

Yep, this thread deals with a seemingly perennial topic, so it's probably going to continue to generate interest. ;)

For my part, I finally had the time to take one of my bikes out for a while the other day (my 1900 V-twin) and tool around some of the local Coastal hills. Not as far away from the normal roads as I like to get, but at least out for some quiet time.

Rather than pocket one of my 5-shot snubs or LCP's, I decided to belt on my CS45 (3.25"/6rd mags). I carried a spare 6rd mag on my belt and had another one in a leather jacket pocket (much like I'll often do when working a range session and carrying additional mags to whatever's on my belt).

Why the subcompact CS45? Well, it was the pistol I grabbed to use as part of my LEOSA qual a few weeks ago, so it was clean and had some loaded mags at hand. It was one of my guns which I hadn't used at the range for the last year, but it balanced, handled and produced rapidly fired shot groups like I'd just used it yesterday. Of course, I've owned that gun since it was a new model, and have fired a lot of rounds through it, so it's a familiar feeling to shoot it.

I carry a Kimber Micro 9 loaded with 7 rounds, and two spare mags, one with 6 rds and the other with 7 rds. Thats a total of 20 rds on me.

I would like to get another 7 rd mag.

I keep a spare box or two of ammo in my vehicle, but that would take a lot of time to reload mags.

Mo be mo bettah. (Pacific Island pidgin saying. A contemporary English translation is that quantity has a quality all its own.) My higher speed and lower drag friends regard me as dreadfully old fashioned. I still have the pair of .38 Special guns, a long heavy one and a light short one. When I was young, back in the last century, a gray haired cop told me something very interesting.

"The best thing you can do to survive a gunfight is to assure your very first shot is a hit." I think that is sensible advice whether I have five rounds in the gun or 33.
