Hi, i have a beautiful sporterized Eddystone M1917 (ser # 950974) that shoots great. The problem is that twice it has fired unexpectedly. Once while unloading and once when i took the safety off. Luckely it was pointed in the proper position both times. I posted here because i figured gunsmiths could answer me. Is it the trigger. How hard is it to replace and do you have any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

safety malfunction.disassemble and clean bolt.inspect safety parts/trigger mechanism.you might have to replace the safety selectors due to wear.e-sarcoinc.com has parts.do not shoot rifle till fixed.it is unsafe.

Sounds to me like the "Sporterizer" molested the military trigger.

It should have a distinctive two-stage pull.

If it doesn't, the guy cut the first stage "bump" off the trigger, and likely shortened the sear & cocking piece engagement too.

When the safety is engaged, it should cam the cocking piece back slightly until it is no longer held by the sear alone.

If the sear or cocking peice is cut too short, or polished at the wrong angle, the gun can fire when the safety is disengaged.

I would imagine some new parts are in order to fix it properly.

Eddystone

Thanks for the info. Oh, i plan on fixing before using again. I have a small collection since my first gun in 1964 and use them alot. This Eddystone is def getting attention and repair since it's one of my most accurate and most used. Really appreciate your help.

I too have a '17 Eddystone Enfield. I went to Brownells and bought their replacement trigger, a Dayton Traister. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=5687/Product/TRIGGER EW5 or EW6 depending upon whether you shortened the magazine in your rifle.
The Dayton Traister triggers are an inexpensive way to get a great trigger that is adjustable for pull weight & overtravel. They come with the part of the striker that engages the sear and a striker spring.
You can also get from Brownells a Dayton Traister, a cock on opening kit that changes the cock on closing feature of the '17 Enfield.

My sporterized '17 Enfield is quite accurate also, giving me groups right around 1" @ 100 yds with my reloads through its old old barrel.

velocette, thanks! I'll check that out and get back to ya. I love the rifle, it's deadly accurate (150 speers) and will reach out a long ways. Gotta take care of the ol' girl.
