EDITORIAL - Doug Thompson Dumps On Gun Owners (ala Zumbo)

I didn't receive any email notification from the NRA about the Zumbo affair.
So I don't know what he is talking about either.

I am also calling out this Doug Thompson person; I am an NRA member and received no such e-mail from the NRA or the NRA-ILA about this during the period of time in question.

I would also like to know whose definition of "assault weapon" he is using. Is it one of the states' definitions? The old federal one or one of the many new ones? New York City's?

Funny how the term gets thrown around so much and yet there is not a single concise definition of what an "assault weapon" actually is.

"In fact, most of the clowns I’ve seen waving assault-style weapons around are para-military wannabes — just like the ones who blew up the Federal Building in Oklahoma City and killed innocent men, women and children."

GRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tried to post a response over there, but received an error... Anyway this is what I wanted to say,

….
I call them "assault" commentators, which may upset some people. Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these commentators among our news reporting fraternity. I'll go so far as to call them "terrorist" columnists. They tell me that some publishing companies are hiring opinion only commentators."

Sorry, folks, in my humble opinion, these people have no place in the free press. We don't need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with their inflammatory opinions, which is an obvious concern. I've always been comfortable with the statement that real reporters don't use opinion pieces. We've always been proud of our "Freedom of the Press."

This really has me concerned. As reporters, we don't need the image published by these opinionated writers. To most of the public, an Op Ed piece is as good as real news. Let's divorce ourselves from them. I say Supreme Court should ban them from the newspapers and magazines.

As goes the second,, so goes the first.

the NRA and its klavern of gun nuts from coming down on him with guns blazing.

Why do these idiots keep harping about the NRA? The NRA had BUPKUS to do with the Zumbo business. They didn't even respond to it for several days.

He says this in response:

Oh really? Then why did I get an email alert from the NRA headquarters on the day Zumbo’s blog post appeared? It urged me to write Outdoor Life and the Outdoor Channel and demand that Zumbo be fired?

I never got such a thing, and this guy says he had quit the NRA some time ago so I'm wondering why he would have gotten such a thing. Did anyone get an alert about Zumo? If so when did the alert go out? It sounds like none of us got this mysterious NRA conspiracy letter.

OK, I went to the NRA website. This was the alert for the 16th:

http://www.nraila.org/GrassrootsAlerts/Read.aspx?ID=379

This for the 23rd:

http://www.nraila.org/GrassrootsAlerts/Read.aspx?ID=379

Nothing about Zumbo at all. In fact this is the NRA's FIRST AND ONLY announcement re. Zumbo, which came on THURSDAY well after the fiasco

I think we caught this blogger in an L-I-E

The more I read on his site..... :banghead:

"In fact, most of the clowns I’ve seen waving assault-style weapons around are para-military wannabes — just like the ones who blew up the Federal Building in Oklahoma City and killed innocent men, women and children."

Tim McVeigh was not a "para-military wannabe" Seargant McVeigh completed PLDC, served in the Gulf War, received the Bronze Star and CIB. Wannabe?? I think he was a military type. Despite his meth use, as well as denouncing his US Citizenship and subsequent murder of innocent people, he did serve this Country. I doubt many of these hunter/fudd anti-gun types can make that claim.

“orchestrated NRA effort”?

You should post a pic of this as proof, because I sure didn’t get anything like that.

All I saw was the people on all my favorite firearms-related forums all heated-up over Zumbo. Doesn’t take long on “those-there intarwebs” now, does it?

As for “clowns waving assault-style weapons” - well, I would be one of those clowns, I imagine. Served in the military, served in Iraq - but I guess that doesn’t matter to you. Or is it only veterans who should have access to semi-auto rifles, in your opinion?

Yeah, you go play “sniper-sniper” with your bolt-action, Elmer - don’t talk to me about playing soldier.

Not very HR of me, I guess, but I get riled at people who think people who like EBRs are somehow "playing at soldier".

Sometimes the squeaky wheel - especially 1 with an agenda full of lies and assanine comments, should just be ignored.

Let this clown go back under the rock which was hiding him - he wants Zumbo spotlight & heat for his own glorification.

No one ever heard of him before, and it should be kept that way.

Remember Doug Thompson doesn't have lucrative company endorsements to go after. He is a freelance writer. Complaining to those who publish him will in most cases up readership by those wanting to see a good fight. This is one that cant be won by conventional means. He personally insulted ME. I live too far away to deal with it personally. I will remember him in case I by chance meet him. Some lessons have to really hurt to be understood.

Any rifle used in an assault becomes an assault rifle, BAN THEM ALL!!!

Perhaps you're right. I assaulted an elk with a bolt-action Winchester two years ago, and a doe with a lever-action .30-30 last fall. Clearly, these weapons are dangerous to our animal friends and should be tightly controlled.

As soon as my freezer is empty and my new hunting tags are valid, I'll be back out there controlling my assault weapons to the best of my ability. :neener:

I've been a member of the NRA for 50 years, and a life member for 35 years. They have had my e-mail address for a number of years.

I never received any e-mail from them on replying toZumbo.

That guy's a liar.

I highly resent someone using their rights under the First Amendment to try to limit the Rights guaranteed to all of us by the Second.

Zumbo didn’t advocate banning the weapons.

Oh, yes he did. Zumbo gave a big hand grenade to a very powerful enemy in a time of war. He needed to go.

This Doug Thompson is no friend of the 2nd Amendment.

All the scum who portray themselves as gun owners and defenders of a RKBA, but are really saboteurs engaging in subversion by perpetuating the 2A = hunting deserve to be outed and smeared for what they are.

Our movement needs to do some HOUSE CLEANING. We can use a good katharsis, because honestly, with allies like these - who needs enemies?

If this makes some hunters resent us more - too bad I say! It's not like we had their help in 1994 anyway. So far, they've been an obstacle to progress, not allies. I do believe we should fight for their support and try and get them to see the light. But we need not cry over their lack of support, since it was never there.

I'm confident that there's a good percentage of hunters that are allies, and that there's another good percentage that can be brought over to our side. However, there are many who will never be convinced.

I don't care what Zumbo or anyone else ever says. There's no apology, no mistake about what he said. That was a confessional. There's no misspeaking or accident about it. You cannot accidentally say those things because they are long held, well thought out BELIEFS.

Anyone who believes that I own "terrorist weapons" because I have an AR-15 is the equivalent of a Bradyite. No difference whatsoever.

I wouldn't be surprised if some leftist gun-banner paid him to cause division between hunters and shooters. Isn't it an incredible COINCIDENCE that this schism is occurring now that the Democrats have power and they have introduced an AWB? Wow ...what a koinkydink!

Henry Bowman said:
I’m a longtime gun-owner, a lifelong hunter and a firm supporter of the Second Amendment that grants Americans the right to own and bear arms.

He lost me right there in the first line. He doen't know what the 2A is, let alone support it.

And what did the NRA (the antis' favorite whipping boy) have to do with Zumbo's fall? Nothing at all. That was a grass roots response that wasn't "led" by anyone or any organization.

Bye, bye, Doug Thompson. Whoever you were.

Slick. I just clicked on the link and it seems "grants" has magically changed to "protects."

Good job Duncan223 for posting the original.

ETA: Someone else caught it too: http://www.capitolhillblue.com/wp/2007/02/27/2214#comment-12151

Y'know I was out of town on business when the Zumbo thing broke and I did not know what was going on. BUT, I do remember seeing the frontpage of USA today at the Hotel a few days before - which just happened to be carrying an article about Police Chiefs complaining about all the "assault weapons" out there.

http://www.usatoday.com/printedition/news/20070220/1a_lede20.art.htm

It seems to me that this, and the noise we are hearing from "gun owners" against EBR's is a little bit too coincidental.

iGSR96 ...Good job Duncan223 for posting the original.

No prob.... but, that is why it is so damn important for the OP to ALWAYS post the complete article, and not just a link to an article (or blog). We need to nail these anti-RIGHTS people every time the raise their ugly head. Kind of like the "whack a mole" game.

They make a claim, we disprove it. They claim the comment was a misquote, WE show the actual comment.

These people cannot win when their agenda is made public. :D
