I was wondering how bad of an effect it had on the ballistics of a fire arm, it would seem holes going the entire length of a barrel would be great for recoil but have horrible effects on the ballistics.

compensated barrels according to glock reduce speeds a bit. along the whole barrel i would imagine this would be magnified. think about the amount of pressure you are letting loose. pressure is what is propelling your round.

A good deal depends on the number of ports and their type. But in general a couple of ports won't reduce velocity by all that much. More will. Which is one reason you tend to see multiple ports or compensators on competition guns rather than carry.

something else i didn't think of in my last post was the possibilities that a) you may be firing at night and comps will affect night vision and b) if you fire from the hip due to close proximity with a target, you run the risk of powder burns. however if the gun serves no carry fashion knock yourself out

IIRC, I believe Massad Ayoob once used the term "vampire" to describe the effect of the hybra-porting on .357 magnum velocities...

I had a snubby .357 with the wiegand ports. It was LOUD.

Well...I lose 100 feet per second...which is next to nothing since I use 125 grain Corbon DPX.

My muzzle flip is reduced 75% which allows me to fire one round a second with excellent accuracy.

Actually...there is no increase in the decibel range...it just sounds louder as the report becomes omni-directional instead of projected down range.

I have always thought that comp'ing a barrel is an approach that has to be done with great care and science. I know that if overdone, then maybe too much will happen and result in downforce on the muzzle....yes? No? Maybe?

It sure seems that in some fo the videos of the Kel-Tec PLR16 with their muzzle break on it, it appears to push down on the muzzle, almost in a negative fashion...if thats possible.
