Enfield Identification

I've been looking at some synthetic enfield mark IV conversion stocks at aim surplus. About 3 years ago I picked up a "Navy Enfield" that had been rechambered for .308 and I have NO IDEA if the synthetic stock will work. Ideas?

The receiver has all the pertinent info, assuming Navy Arms didn't grind it out and renumber it.

Odds are extremely good that it is a #4.

If it's a Navy Arms Enfield chambered in .308 then it's most likely an Ishapur 2A or 2A1 based on the Enfield #1 action. I'm not 100% sure but I think the wood is interchangeable between the "Ishy's" and the #1's.

Hmm well what I can read on the receiver doesnt appear to be english. Maybe Indian? Anyhow, the iron sights only go to 800m....

Clean riflling and it only cost me $30! Hehehehe.(garage sale )

Maybe I'll just buy a #1 sporterizer kit. *shrugs*

Ishapore 2A are nearly identical to #1s, with the major diffs being mags and the higher strength steel in the receiver to handle .308.

If the writing isn't english, then I'd take monkeymans's word on it.

number4 and number1 stocks interchange. I say this because one of my number4s has a marking disc on the buttstock, and no number4's had them.

If the rear sight only goes to 800 meters it's a 2A1. The 2A rear sights go to, IIRC, 3000 yards. My Gibbs #7 is built on a 2A I'm sad to say as the 2A's are considered C&R but the 2A1's are not. On the right side of the buttstock socket it should say RIFLE 2A1 and the date of manufacture. The 2A1 I used to have keyholed everything over 125 grains as the rifling was just about gone but my #7 is quite accurate. Fun gun to shoot.

Yeesh, I need better ventilation in my office. That's 2000 yards for the 2A rear sight, not 3000.

The number 4 has a one piece stock

The #1's and #3's have 2 piece stocks. So all those telling you they interchange here are wAAAAAAAAAAAAAy wrong.

The .308 is originally the mk3 model 2a1 from ishapore india. I just took the synthetic stock off mine last night and put the old wood on for a military rifle shoot next weekend. Sight goes to 800 meters.

to answer your question though most synthetic stocks will fit either .303 or .308's. Save your money on the plastic stock. They are nice but these guns aren't all that accurate because the chambers are so loose.

Now a #4 in .303 makes a fine fine shooter. This is what I should have bought.

number1 and number4 rifles have the same style of stock. number3 (pattern 14) rifles are completely different rifles and have one piece stocks.
