Basicaly this is a heads up for anyone who owns an Eotech 557...

I recently bought one with the 4x magnifier and was soooo excited to try it out...it works fine in regular mode BUT when in night vision mode the aiming dots are NOT crisp - they are more like semi-circular dashes or swooshes. After noticing this with my NV I tryed another set to make sure it was the Eotech and NOT the NV. I then checked all the brightness levels in normal daytime mode and found that the retical has the same glitch in the 2 dimmest settings...

I notified Eotech and sent it in for repair...I included a detailed description of the problem but it was sent back to me and they said it was fine and it just must be my eyes not ajusting to the eotech...BS...

Anyway I posted the problem on ar15.com and so far a lot of other people have found thier unit has the same defect...

we have found model 557's that were manufactured Nov or Dec of 2007 do NOT have the problem, so far everyone with the glitch was produced in feb, march or april of 2008...

anyway, after several people found the problem and I took detailed pics though NV Eotech now admits "they have to do further testing" to find out where the problem is occuring...anyway at least they now admit there is a problem...

if you own a 557 you might want to make sure it works as advertised and in ALL settings...the glitch is easier to see with magnification but even with no magnification you can easily tell its not right, especually in NV mode, the rectical is fuzzy and VERY blurred...

here is some pics for referance:

CORRECT image, this is how it should look, this was taken in the 3rd dimmest setting:

now turned to the 2nd dimmest setting, it gliches:

Wow. That's pretty unusual. Thanks for the heads up. I was thiniking about getting another EOTech and was considering a 557.

well got it back for the second time today...

took it down to the basement, mounted it, turned it on...

now all the day settings work properly, no swoosh rectical...BUT I noticed that the dimmest setting is not as dim as before...before to see the dimmest setting you needed almost total darkness...so basicaly what they did was reprogram the brightness scale up a few notches...as in the brightest setting is now so bright it will cause eye damage...i turned it to the highest brightness setting and it projects the immage SO BRIGHT it projects through the glass and onto my hand 2 feet behind the eotech...TRUST ME, you dont want that projecting in your eye...

so then i tested with night vision...when you first turn it onto the night vision setting and look through with NV the rectical does not swoosh, but again its brighter...again its like they adjusted the scale...its so bright it blooms VERY bad through night vision, SO BRIGHT i can see it with my naked eye!!! DUH eotech, if you can see the image with your naked eye its TOO BRIGHT for night vision! SO OK i thought, let me adjust the brightness down so it does not bloom...well guess what, adjusted it down far enough AND GUESS WHAT???? THE SAME PROBLEM AS BEFORE SWOOSH RECTICAL!!!!!!!

So basicaly, in 2 months all they did was reprogram the sight and change the brightness scale by moving it up...so now the higher NV settings will ruin you NV and the lower ones turn to a huge swoosh!!!

I still maitain the problem is in the laser diode and when it getts less pwer to dim it it is glitching but hey mabey im crazy...

I will be calling eotech tomorrow and speaking with the highest up person i can find..this will be my APSOLUTe LAST TRY!!!! And by last try I mean im going to request they buy the sight back...weather it works or not im done with eotech for life, period...DONE...i give up...

i should have listened and went with aimpoint but i liked certain things about the eotech sight others do not offer...in the end though id rather have an aimpoint the WORKS PROPERLY AS ADVERTISED!

I saw on another forum where they had recalled those (heck, it might have been you that posted it). I like the idea of the BDC reticle.

Sorry to hear that it wasn't fixed. Fortunately, I have not had to have mine serviced (552), so I haven't had to deal with EOTech's people.
