"I have many serious questions about Mr. Holder's nomination [and] at the top of the list are his anti-2nd amendment right positions." -- U.S.
Sen. David Vitter (R-LA)

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

The Senate Judiciary Committee last week delayed the vote on Eric Holder until later this week. This is good news for gun owners as it gives us more time to put the heat on the senate members of the Judiciary Committee.

It is imperative that -- even if Holder's nomination clears the committee -- there is a recorded vote with a strong showing of opposition. The worst thing that could happen would be for President Obama's anti-gun pick for Attorney General to move quickly through the Senate with a strong "mandate." That would certainly come back to haunt gun owners.

Thankfully, there are some Senators who are lining up against Holder:

* Wyoming Senator John Barrasso (R-WY): "Given Holder's career of attacks on the Second Amendment, his nomination continues to be of great concern to me.... Our nation's highest law enforcement officer must be committed to protecting and defending our individual rights to keep and bear arms. I intend to vote no on the nomination of Eric Holder."

* Senator David Vitter (R-LA): "[Holder has] clearly advocated near universal licensing and registration, and he joined and filed an amicus brief in the District of Columbia v. Heller U.S. Supreme Court case arguing that the 2nd amendment was NOT an individual right. That's deeply disturbing."

Outside pressure has already slowed down the momentum to confirm Eric Holder. Most of Obama's nominees have been installed already -- including the recent confirmation of Senator Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.

ACTION: By receiving this alert, it means that one of your senators (listed below) is on the powerful Judiciary Committee. He needs to stand up and oppose Holder's nomination -- or at the very least, make certain there is a recorded vote. Please contact him, even if you have done so already. The pre-written letter below can be copy/pasted into his webform at the listed url, or you can type your own message.

It is important that this be done upon receipt of this alert, because the vote will probably occur within the next 24 hours.

----- Prewritten Letter -----

Dear Senator:

Please do not support Eric Holder for Attorney General, and ensure that there is a recorded vote in the Judiciary Committee.

Holder does not support my Second Amendment rights, as evidenced by the fact that he signed on to an anti-gun amicus brief in the DC v. Heller case, arguing that there is NO INDIVIDUAL RIGHT to keep and bear arms.

I will consider a vote for him as an ANTI-GUN vote.

Gun Owners of America will let me know what you do. Thank you.

Sincerely,
