Even with Ike, you gotta love Texas

LOL!!!! Get on 610 and stay there! THAT is priceless!

One of the things that honks me off is that the news media, needing SOMETHING to talk about, start yapping about things outside their capacity. A weatherman on Channel 2 going on and on about how your house is going to slowly weaken and weaken under sustained 60 mph winds and then crumple like a house of cards when a 75 mph gust comes by is out of bounds. Can you say, "inciting panic in the newbies"????? Suuuuuurrrrreeee you can.....

I like the idea of using the time to reload except for that pesky little part about needing light and thinking candles in the reloading room are a right bad idea :neener:

On the other hand, the resultant explosion might scare Ike away!?!?!?!

PS: thank you to the mods for keeping this open. Yes, it's marginal in its gun content, but it's serving a purpose and I appreciate your forbearance. Y'all are awesome.

latest update is in

and they say it will be down to a category 1 by the time it crosses Harris county.

since springmom and I are at the far north of the county, that's good news for us.

for y'all with loved oned in the Woodlands, it's even better news for them.

Media event

It truly is incredible to watch these folks on the local news try to fill 24 hrs of airtime with information that may have some value to someone...
There are multitudes of hard nipples in that crowd. (That is metaphorically speaking, of course.)

I must disagree with springmom though...
if we had one station that showed a single static view of the seawall, with no talking heads involved...
I'd play a little Jimmy Buffet in the background and be happy 'til the lights go out.

On the gun side...
My recently ex-marine son and his latest squeeze came over from Webster to stay with us...
He's a fair shot...
She is an unknown...
May have to eat her...

I don't know if the hurricane had made landfall yet or not.

But may I suggest that all Texans, Floridians, Louisianans, etc. Do kind of a roll-call, before and after? Leave a nam, phone number, and address at least.

Then, if someone doesn't check in afterwards, we can maybe help find them.

A nice thought, Smaug. Lots of us are pretty leery of putting personal info out there on the 'net. You don't have to be a member here to read posts, and of course once a post is up on the 'net by someone, you can Google them and find what they've written. If what they wrote is their real name, address, etc., that can result in some interesting issues.

Good luck folks. I've been where many of you are. You should be fine unless you live within 3-5 miles of shore, then I'd worry about flooding. I weathered a handfull of Cat 2 and lower storms in my very low lying house in FL, but I was a few miles inland and never had water come in the house.
I just kept the beer cold and the rifle handy.

Best wishes and good luck...

As an insurance adjuster, I have seen the ravages of several storms. If you have problems after the storm with your carrier, I humbly offer my insights and experience. PM me if you need help or have questions. Be careful with generators and candles as they cause more problems than looters. Have some plan for locking/moving your guns if the shtf at your home. Stay flexible and fluid and only slightly lubricated.:D

LOL!!! Slightly lubricated, hm? I must confess to having put a really nice Chardonnay in the 'fridge to go with shrimp for supper. If I'm going to get blown to North Dakota, I at least intend to go well-fed. :neener:

Nalioth, I am glad it's still a nice day there. I agree the news media always likes to make things sound worse than they are. I guess it's thier way of getting the viewers to watch.

Springmom I am thankfull the mods kept this thread open too. CNN said it could head for Houston. Is this true?

CNN said said if oil refineries and chemical plants could loose power and be damaged and gas prices could go up again. Can anyone or everyone tell us if this is true. Hospital and Nursing homes are out of power too.

Mrs. A,

Yes, it is coming for Houston. To borrow a phrase from one of my favorite SF books, we are getting a duck's eye view of the shotgun blast.

As for gas prices and other post-storm fallout, that's hard to predict. The TX and LA coasts are home to 20 percent of US refining capacity, and most of what they refine comes from the off-shore production wells. The wells should come through OK, but if flooding, wind, or fire damage the refineries, or they are without electricity for a protracted period, we could be in for a significant shortage of refined products, including gasoline, for a while. that will tend to push prices up.

However (there's always a "however", isn't there?), the recent drop in demand for oil overall had West Texas Intermediate crude trading back below $100 / barrel this morning, so the net impact is hard to predict.

Channel 13 just said they are thinking Ike might come in to the west, near Angleton. While that's good for me (I'm east side of Houston), that means even greater surge will enter Galveston Bay. Hmmm...on 2nd thought, that's not so good for me anyway, as we're 20 miles from the north end of the Bay.

OK...so we're hosed no matter what happens.

Wife is talking about trying to bug out. I'm thinking stay put. On the road, anything can happen - break down, fuel shortage, traffic jam - on the way to Austin and folks' house.

For dinner, we're going to make baked 'taters with left-over, chopped brikset loading 'em up. Carbs & protein...mmmmmm. And ice cream for dessert (gonna melt anyway!)

If any of you not in the Houston area want to see/hear what's happening from local channels, check out www.khou.com, www.abc13.com, www.ktrh.com, et. al.

I guess I'm going to go for a walk around the neighborhood and stretch the legs for a while.

We ought to have a THR - post-IKE somehow....

Apologies for not keeping my posts 'gun related'.

Here is something I've dusted off for the occasion (and it will probably go back in the closet afterwards)

saiga556_1246.jpg

and not sure how many of y'all keep up with the sales threads, but I picked this little gem up yesterday via our sales forum. ( It's a Cz P-01 )

Texas Ike style

Prince Y, I'm with you. I'll load up the shot shells with dry ice. They say it's going to get stronger?

Finally a good excuse to tell some folks to keep their Powder Dry. :) But in all serious, to all our Texas brethren, keep your heads down, and your eyes open, and we'll see you back on THR after power comes back. God willing and the creek don't rise. Sorry, I'm weak and I couldn't help myself. : x

Make that, Food, Drink, Ammo, and a Boat (or scuba gear), and I'm with ya....

You'ens down there had better pick up either a Glock or a speargun, for your underwater self-defense needs - good luck guys. :uhoh:

They are saying that 40% of the population decided to stay on Galveston Island.

Not cool.

The strong and quick thinking might make it through, but those prone to fail are going to die.

I wish them luck.

Gun content? I've got some gun content!

I have my Kimber TLE stainless on my right hip, and a spare mag on my left.

My 11-87P is locked and loaded, and sitting nearby.

I'm ready, but I seriously doubt there will be any need for firepower. I live quite a distance from the low life types.

You Texans be safe. Sounds like a wild night coming. :) Gas prices in middle Tenn went up last night at midnight almost .50/gal. :( There is rationing here too that I saw this morning(10 gal per) due to short supplies of gas in the S.E. US.
