I am not sure what to get next. I am considering a hunting rifle although I have an interest in hunting I have never been and I am not sure about gutting a large animal. I have just tooled up for reloading/casting and would prefer to buy a centerfire gun next although I know I need a shotgun. Also my local range does not allow shotguns. As of now I just punch paper at my local range. I should also mention the gun has to be under or around 500(cheaper the better).

As of now I have
Glock 26
ruger 10/22
phoenix arms .22 pistol(cheap but works)
Marlin mod 60

i voted for a .223 rifle. an AR platform would be my first choice if i were in your shoes. in my opinion, there should be a a few basics in a collection. a 9/40/45 pistol, a .22, a deer rifle, which .223 will do for in a pinch or survival situation, and a longer range rifle like a .308 or .30-'06.

another thing you may want to consider is some sort of 12 ga shotgun. the ol' remmy 870 is a good choice. i like a semi-auto personally because i like clay games and they're a little less harsh on the shoulder.

let us know what you decide and good luck.

You really need two guns. A centerfire rifle and a shotgun. A Savage 10 or Mossberg 500 are within your budget.

Very good choices.

1 - .223
2 - .45
3 - .308
4 - 12 Gauge
5 - .357 (Should be on the list)

I'd get an FAL while they are down. If Barak Hussein fires one over the bow even we are going back into crazy mode in the blink of an eye.

I will be purchasing my NEXT gun and there will be many to follow. I am not in denial and 2 more guns wont cut it.:D

well i have a .22/.410 it is a gun with two barrels a 410 shotgun and a .22 rifle over it. another good benefit is the 410 also shoots .45 rounds, it just has no rifling in that barrel.
I know they make then so I want a bigger one with something like a 12 ga and .223, .308 or .30-'06.
it would be single shot break action but they are nice.
I think i paid 250 for my stevens 22-410 over under.

I really feel like every gun collection needs a 1911.:D

If you can one for 500 dollars, ill pay you 600 for it.

I'd say 1911 or .223 rifle, but given the budgetary constraints (hey, we all have them) I'd go for a Mosin-Nagant. Lots and lots of fun :)

So let me get this straight - you want a gun to add to your collection, you're not trying to get any specific utility out of it, you just want a new gun to shoot? Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just a very broad question. Guns are very individualized - some people will love a certain platform, other people will hate it. Case in point, you've asked a dozen people here and gotten a dozen very different answers. If you just pick the most popular gun everything things deserves to be in your collection, you'll have another line item on your list but there's no telling if you'll have a gun you actually like.

I think you just need to find a gun you enjoy shooting. Get out to the range and shoot a bunch of different guns until you find something you like. Do you have a range that rents guns nearby? What about friends who'll let you shoot their guns. Try and AR, try an AK, try a 1911, try a bolt rifle, try some milsurps. You'll be able to figure out which one pushes your buttons.

But if I can give you one piece of advice, it's, "Don't be a cheapskate." If you decide you like a gun that's generally out of your price range (the 1911, for instance) and you go out and buy a $399 piece of crap just to have one, you're never going to be happy with it. If the next gun for you is out of your price range, wait and save your money. It's worth it.

(on that note, a decent used Colt or S&W 1911 can be had for around $650 - save a few buck more, you know you want it)

I wouldn't say I don't have a purpose. I don't hunt but have a desire to do so but I spend most of my time at the range punching paper. In a rifle I would look for something that would offer me the option to hunt up to whitetail deer. A shotgun would be nice as I live in Florida and most shots on a deer will be under 100yds but I do not have a place to shoot it regularly as they don't allow them at my range.

I threw a 1911 in there if I got one It would be compact and I am sure If I purchased one I would end up selling my glock 26 so 400+500= a nice 1911. I bought my 26 because 9mm ammo is cheap and I wanted to shoot it as much as possible but now I reload ammo and could afford to shoot alot of .45. I think I will wait to buy another pistol though.

I like the idea of a mosin but If I purchased one I would get a 91/30 and sporterize/scope it and possibly a m44 to keep as is. The only thing is I would like to have a caliber that I can reload and 7.62x54r is usually milsurp.

I am leaning towards saving for a rifle which one I am unsure about.

I voted for a 243. However, I don't know if it's what I would pick just what I would pick out of your choices. I'd probably look for a 30-06 next. If you only plan to have one centerfire rifle I think a 30-06 is the way to go. You can take most game in this country from big to small with it.

The 243 is another great round but I wouldn't want it for anything bigger than deer if hunting with it. It's a fun round to shoot and has a very light recoil. The only thing holding me back from it over a 30-06 would be the wide range of animals that could be taken with it and the fact that the barrel life is supposedly a lot shorter than calibers such as 30-06.

25-06 is another round to consider if you handload. The lack of factory bullets would be the biggest thing that would hold me back from that.

Another gun I think everyone should have is a 12 gauge but, your poll only listed a pump 12 gauge. I've had a pump and didn't like it. A 12 gauge semi auto would probably be my choice for the next gun.

Honestly, I'd pick between the 12 gauge and a 30-06. If you get the 30-06 and want something else the 243 is a great round if you want something with less recoil.

You're biggest weakness is a solid home defense platform and/or hunting (if you want to hunt). You've got plenty of .22s for plinking and small game. You have a handgun, but it's always good to have more.

It's often said that a 12 gauge is the most versatile and basic weapon of any collection, and the most powerful firearm that most people can own (afford to own, I suppose). Buckshot and slugs, semiauto or pump. Hunting and home defense. Easy to use. It's the foundation of any collection.

Well, I wouldn't go out and buy a hunting rifle without ever having hunted or knowing you're going to hunt regularly, especially not with your limited collection. Most hunters I know have a couple spare rifles - I'd say find a friend with a spare and hunt with him for a season, see if you like it.

Meanwhile, I think ditching the GLOCK and getting a nice 1911 would be your most rewarding move. You'll have one of the best handguns ever made, and .45ACP is very easy and affordable to reload.

Otherwise, I think every firearms enthusiast should have a 12 gauge shotgun and a .357 magnum revolver. Consider the shotgun - home defense and SHTF applications, hunting applications, and a fun gun to shoot. I have a Mossberg 590A1 myself, and I love it!

I reload 7.62x54r... and I use the widely available Sellior & Bellot brass. Go for it. It makes a great hobby... a nice old millsurp and an unlimited supply of ammo. Besides, when plinking it is nice to have a softer load then the factory.

Every man needs a 12 gauge pump. You already have a handgun. After the 12 gauge, I'd think about a rifle, probably in .308.
