Expanding necks

In the past, I've resized brass with little problem. I've made .357 Herrett from .30-30's. Now, I'm sizing up some WSSM brass from .25 to .35. Evidently this brass is considerably thicker than most. We tried using the expander ball in the regular loading die and bent the shaft that holds the sizer button.

Just sizing from .25 to .284 takes a lot of effort even with the expander button polished and lots of lube.

Does somebody make an expander other than pushing a regular button type thru and stretching the necks?

Redding makes tapered expander balls just for that purpose.

You will probably have to do the expansion in steps.

You need to get a Sinclair catalog.

They make tapered expanders that work very well.

lee's ez expanders are tapered.

Hornady was first, then RCBS, RCBS has a cut-off date for tapered expander's. And yes it requires effort to neck up some cases.

When forming and necking up a case foot note #3 and #4 apply, foot note # 3 and 4 indicate RCBS changed the expander ball in April 1983.

I 2nd the Sinclair catalog.The expander they make is for sizing the neck to fit the mandrel in a neck turning tool.Buy the die,and several sizes of mandrels,they will work great for what you are doing. Lightman

I neck up 280 Remington cases to 338/06 and 35 Whelen, it takes effort, no one measures before and again after so the effort required is meaningless, they do not know if the neck gets thicker or shorter, they do not know if the neck gets thinner or longer, and they do not know if the case body shortens/squats, they just do not measure before and again after.

Chamfer the inside of the neck, and dip the case neck into white graphite. I always also bush the inside of the neck first. The least amount of drag you can eliminate, the kinder for your sizing ball, and the less force to size the cases.

Something that hasn't been mentioned. Are they nickle plated? If you're trying to neck up nickle plated brass like that forget it.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'm gonna have to go the Redding route. Gonna anneal the necks today to see how much that helps.

Why not just fire form them. Charge the case with 5 or 10 grains of a fast burning powder plug the neck by sticking it in some canning wax chamber and fire.
