You will get different answers depending on your area. Where I live, I use the .22LR most often between 75-120yds on ground squirrel (vermin eradication), if hunting tree squirrel the ranges would likely be much shorter.
im guessing at 50 yards for the longest shot on average. most are 20-50 yards at most, I have shot a few ground hogs at a guestimated 100 yards with a .22mag rifle. that said .22lr 50 yards is about the farthest ive taken small game on a count of the target is very small at that distance and I usually don't have a bench rest of sorts.
15-40 yards for me. I usually won't take a shot under 15 yards nor over 45 yards on squirrels. If they get within 15 yards I am more apt to have fun watching their antics.
You are absolutely correct. The .22LR will effectively harvest easily to 150+ yards. My longest 1-shot kills on woodchuck (with a .22LR), has been 175 yards, through the neck. The old Ruger 10/22 heavy barrel can really lay it down.
Man, I can't hardly see much beyond 50 yards any more, so I'd have to say 25 yards with out a scope, 50-75 with a scope. After all the head of a grey squirrel aint all that big hiding in an old oak tree.
I watched a video on Youtube where they shot a .22 at a piece of 1/2" plywood at distances up to 400 yards and got complete pass through.
Since it's on the internet it has to be true, right?
Bon Jour!
There is a reason why many 22 rifles are sighted in at 50 yds. It is also the distance at which hitting a small target begins to get challenging with a 22.
Around here squirrel hunting the river bottoms most shots are 5-50 feet. Get away from the rivers and most would probably be around 25-50 yards. My personal longest was a beaver at just over 100 shooting along the stream that ran along the back of our property while squirrel hunting when I was about 11 or 12.
