Out of curiosity, how many people give the external coating of the slide on their Glock, XD, and other modern polymer handguns with ferritic nitrocarburizing a wipe down with oil or CLP after cleaning?

I can't find any manual for these guns which suggests that this should be done - yet I'm worried about rusting, etc. I've heard from some people that these coatings are designed to absorb oil for rust prevention.

Thanks!

I wipedown all metal parts with The "Oily" Rag (in my case, Eezox) after I have finished the reassembly & action-check.

I do not know if it is required/necessary with Tenifer/Melonite surfaces, but it is part of an old habit that I figure certainly doesn't hurt to continue. ;)

You are certainly not going to harm anything by wiping down with an oily rag. I don't do Glocks but I would wipe them with an oily rag down if I did. All guns, even stainless.

Is this for guns that will be put away in storage between uses?
If so, try wiping them down and then wrapping them in a rag that's wetted with a silicone spray.

I have a 2nd generation Glock 19, it gets a massage with Breakfree CLP whenever the finish looks chalky and dried out. I let it sit for a half hour, wipe off the excess and it looks brand new. My newer Glocks, the two 36s seem to have a different finish that doesn't require this.

On the blued Springfield 1911, it gets Eezox, it has become my favorite for blue and stainless finishes.

Glock 21 gen 04 .45acp ...

I own a LE trade in Glock 21 .45acp gen 04. I purchased the 21 with 3 dot night sights & 3 13rd used magazines in 05/2014.
I apply a light amount of Ballistol or Froglube, www.Froglube.com .
The Glock slide doesn't need any gun oil or CLP but a small wipe every few weeks isn't going to break it, ;) .
The grey-black Glock gen 04 color doesn't appeal to me but Froglube or good ole Ballistol can do the job until I can afford the Cerakote or Metalife work to the 21's upper. :D

I hate an oily pistol or rifle.

I use a reel rag or silocone cloth to wipe my pistols and rifles down with after I have cleaned them.

I live in Colorado where there is normally not much moisture so rust is not an issue here. But there is nothing wrong with a nice coat of silicone between shooting and cleaning. It shines em up, leaves them looking great and evaporates off eventually.

There is a place called Rusty's Rags that has great little silicone, sheepskin and cloth kits for rifles or pistols. I have no affiliation with them but its a great product. Alternatively you can get a reel rag at about any fishing supply store, same idea without the sheepskin to get into the little cracks and crevasses.
