My intentions is to keep this going by moving onto 6mm projectiles. What is your favorite .243 caliber rifle cartridge? I'm focusing on bolt and lever rifles mostly used in hunting and target shooting applications. The list of choices in this poll is derived from the Hornady 11th edition reloading manual, which is the latest manual I have currently. Any wildcats or others not listed here can be categorized as "Other 6mm".

We've already had polls and discussions for 8mm, 7mm, .308 Cal, and .25 Cal. I think we'll do a few more of these and then post the results in a single future thread.

Below is a picture of the 3 6mms I own and operate.

This one is interesting to me. From a case capacity standpoint, both the 243 Win (52.8gr H2O) and 6mm Rem (54.6gr H2O) have more than the 6mm Creedmoor (51gr H2O). Additionally, the 6mm Remington has a max pressure of 65,000 PSI while the 6mm Creedmoor has a max pressure of 62,000. That said, the 11th edition Hornady reloading manual lists the 6mm Creedmore after the 6mm Rem with a published max velocity of the same 100gr bullet in each with a 200 fps difference favoring the Creedmoor. That's a head scratcher to me.

I'm aware the 6mm Creedmore rifles have a more aggressive twist rate in most applications to favor the heavier bullets but case capacity and max pressure are usually the 2 indicators for max velocity.

Also, according to what I'm reading here: https://bulletin.accurateshooter.co...city change with, loss is NOT that significant.
having a faster twist rate in your barrel will actually slow the bullet down, but in an almost negligible result. Their test results were a loss of 5 FPS from a 1-12 to a 1-8. where all other variables were the same.

That’s two totally different applications
True indeed! I’d like to hunt a time or two with a dasher target rifle. I’d also like to target shoot with a fast twist (like 7 or 8) 243 win. (Barrel burner though it would most definitely be!) a time or two. Then it would be barrel time. Haha.

No argument here! But I don't see a need to make 2 separate polls for each centerfire rifle caliber, one exclusively for hunting and one exclusively for target shooting/competition/precision/etc. Personally, I enjoy hunting AND target shooting often with the same rifle and ammunition. I don't think I'm alone in that category. What am I missing here?

Had to vote "other" for the 6mm SLR:

Kind of a 6mm C +P with cheap brass (much cheaper with a bunch of .243Win fans around that don't reload). Mines got a 26" Bartlein barrel and is stupid accurate, 105s at 3150 without pushing it using H4831SC, can get a little more out of it with H4350. My reamer is cut for AICS mags, with a slightly shorter throat. IF I build another 6mm this will be it.

.243 Win is definitely my favorite as I inherited an a Winchester Model 670 from my grandfather in .243. While it is a budget model 70 from the 70s with a blind mag and cheap wood it is probably one of my most prized possessions. Whats interesting is it has a 3 position safety which I understand isn’t standard on model 670s so I’m not sure if its the original bolt or not. The throat on that old rifle is pretty well shot out as my grandpa liked to load’em hot. But it still will easily keep a three shot group under a quarter. I plan on building another 6mm on a Savage 110 action some day and I haven’t decided if I’m going to go with standard .243 or AI it or choose one of the many 6mms listed above. But I am a believer of the 6mm in my area of Kansas. A beautiful do all caliber from coyotes to white tails.

I voted 243 as its the only 6mm that I have. Its a Remington 700 with a Kreiger Varmint contour barrel. A Lapua case full of 4350, Federal Match Primer and a Sierra Match King its a one hole rifle. It shoots equally well with either 4831 or RL-22 and a 108 Berger.

At this point im in the "other" group.

6mm-284. The one I had would launch 95gr bonded bullets out of its 24" tube at 3400fps. The Downside would be barrel life and the real need for a 3.2" magazine, as id like to use 115s at 31-200 ish.

I waffle between the -284 and the 6x47Rem(not lapua). It worked great with bullets up to 90grs, and ok with 100s. In terms of a low recoil practical hunting round for what I do.....its hard to beat. Just not quite as flashy as the bigger rounds, and mine was chambered in a rifle too large for the cartridge.

243s which is the only other 6mm Ive had would be last, not because it isnt a fantastic round (it is), but just because its not one of my favorites for some reason.

Back in the early 70's, I started out with a new Remington 700BDL chambered in .243 Win., and when I started shooting 100NP's in it, I remember thinking now it's a real deer rifle!

I shot it a LOT and put quite a few deer in my freezer with it and even the biggest black bear that I ever shot. It's been through hell and back, but it's not as accurate as it was the first few thousand rounds, but it's still plenty accurate for hunting.

Sometime years later, I became friends with PO Ackley and he put together another 700 chambered in .240 Weatherby for me, and I've shot a lot of deer with it, even won a few magnum class BR matches with it, but to me these days it's just a hunting rifle.

IF, I would have known then what I know now, I would have gotten a Rem. 700 in 6mm Remington.

That's really awesome that you were friends with PO Ackley. Thanks for sharing!

I love my 240 Wby too. I've only shot a bobcat with it to date. I plan on doing some hunting with it next season.

My poll question asks for our favorite 6mm caliber cartridges, but if it were asking for my favorite 6mm rifle... I would have chosen my 240 Wby because its truly a custom work of art.

Well, I bought a Masterpiece Arms in 6mm GT for targets, but life has conspired against my being able to do anything with it since my initial outing. I hope to have more time with it in the not-too-distant future. I also like the 6mm ARC in an AR.

But my favorite to date based on the number of rifles chambered in it is 243 Ackley. So I voted "other."
