I teach ' knife skills ' at my son's dujo and i try so hard to make people understand a knife fight is a horrible thing and it never goes on longer than about 10-15 seconds and it is NEVER like the movies..The best best defensive blade you have is the one you have with you when it all goes sideways..bigger harder to carry knives..just like bigger harder to carry guns are often times left at home.A knife should feel like a part of your hand, find THAT knife and then find a school local that teachs the basics and hope you go thru life and never have to use it.

"The movies" typically show knife DUELS. Is that what you teach?

Knife Duels.....?? UM nope i teach knives are a weapon of last resort..I teach they are a horrible nasty weapon you must have resolve to use..I teach people enough skills that if the unthinkable happens and they must defend themselves or a loved one they will survive..i do not teach to everyone,i do not advertise.I teach to cops, security officers and the like, word of mouth is the only advertising i thats done.I respect knives.

A knife fight is no more a horrible thing than the use of any other potentially Lethal Weapon as a defensive measure. Most people's concept of a so-called knife fight is two guys with knives fighting each other, which is precisely the worst time to use a knife. Yes, using a knife defensively may be bloody and awful, but so is smacking someone open with a blunt object, or shooting someone.

The disadvantage of using a knife for defense is that you have to be close. The advantage of using a knife for defense is that you can use it while you're close. The really horrible thing about a knife fight is that you're close to an aggressor while bad things are happening, but it's much better to have some bad things happen to a violent attacker than to you, the righteous Defender.

A good "knife fight" might be a Defender using a knife to escape being choked. Knife fights consisting of two idiots cutting each other should be avoided if there is practically any alternative whatsoever.

I don't think any of us are looking to get into a fight of any kind, but I'm sure we all agree that if we cannot escape, hide or talk our way out of the conflict and must fight, then a knife is better than nothing and then it's good to have an idea on how to use the knife in various scenarios, including where the aggressor is using a knife. And no, one can't legally carry a firearm where I live.

There was a trend when I was just going into high school, (1968) of two guys squaring off with knives as opposed to fists. It's nothing short of a miracle nobody got killed. Cuts to forearms, chest were badges of honor. No thanks. I've studied /practiced edged weapon combat most of my adult life, as a last resort. Kelly Worden was teaching along those lines, toe to toe knife fighting; to me it seemed insane.

I like Kelly Worden generally. I had to disarm a 300 pound crazed drunk who was trying to stab people playing cards with an M14 with a sharpened Bayonet using my 8 inch Randall
# 1 . Saved the guy from getting shot or murdering some one but I almost severed his forearm with my cut which caused him to drop weapon and hold the damaged arm spurting blood. The company Commander returned my knife the MPs took. Ah Vietnam !

The one knife that I would say is my favorite fighter would be my Randall No.1. Custom ordered many years ago with optional input by knife fighting author David E. Steele, it features a 6" stainless steel blade, nickel silver double hilt, and a black Micarta handle.

Exactly my vote too! Mine had the border patrol style handle. Grieves me I had to sell it along with a model 7(?) dive knife.

So you had to go knife vs spear. It sounds like you did great.

The Ontario Ranger EOD Karambit looks excellent. I dont think there is any other type of knife more devastating then a karambit for self defense. It's simple and rugged design allows for excellent slashing ability.

I gave mine away, but it was a decent piece of kit, solid and well-made. Sheath was okay~ could have been a bit tighter fit.
