I have my eye on the G34 or the SP01 Phantom..

When I say competition its nothing serious, I take some tactical courses with buddies and just want something bigger than my G19.

Any other suggestions to look into?

I've used the Glock 34 in 9mm and it does quite well.

If you're already carrying a G19, your best bet would probably be a G17 or G34 to stick with the same basic platform and get some mag interchangeability benefit.

In my case I carry a HK P2000, so I stick with either an HK P30L or VP9. The P30L and P2000 share the same LEM trigger, and all three have the European mag release as well as my Walther PPQs.

I shoot IPSC
SP 01 phantom is a nice option. CZs are very good competition pistols.
Here it is one of the guns shooters most like for competition.
I shoot a Sig P226, a Bul Cherokee and sonetimes a HK USP. Would like to have a VP9
I do not like Glocks at all, so my Glock opinion would not be valid.

The Glock 34 would most likely serve you very well as you already have a Glock 19 and are familar with it. For myself I would use my Browning Hi-Power as it has a great trigger, great sights, is very accurate, and extremely reliable.

I was lucky enough to have a rental range near me when i started out. Over a few visits I tried out a wide array of different handguns. It didn't take long before I found that I preferred all metal guns and the trigger feel of hammer style guns.

Now before I go on let me say that if I had to carry the darn things on my hip day in and day out it would be a different story. But this is for range playing and some competition shooting.

So.... back to the story. I got to where I was considering the Beretta 92FS or the IWI Jericho/Baby Eagle. Then someone let me try their tuned up Shadow which they use in IPSC. Not only did the gun fit me like the proverbial favorite pair of slippers but the trigger was wonderful and the recoil seemed so smooth. It was literally love at first magazine and a Shadow was my first gun.

I later got a Beretta and after a couple of years sold it. Then I found an old preB 75 and bought that. I use the 75 for my IDPA shooting because at the time the Shadow was too heavy for the stock class. But even with the new rules both the Shadow and the 75 are staying in the family.

Now I'm likely as strongly a fanatic about my CZ's as many Glock owners are about their Glocks. All I'm saying is that you should give a CZ a chance and see if it clicks with you like it has done with so many of us.

Browning Hi Powers can be weird for competition because of the mag safety. You have to do the remove/insert/remove dance when you unload and show clear every time.

I have hi-powers that I have installed the trigger from brownells that takes away the mag safety but I have only used them a few times. Not a lot of aftermarket "go fast" stuff for them and they are not an SSP/production pistol.

I have shot a 34 for years and it is my #2 pick out of any pistol and a lot less expensive than my favorite, SVI.

You might want to consider how the rules of different shooting sports might affect your choice of firearm. Even if your current plans are to shoot in an "anything goes" match you might eventually want to shoot IDPA, USPSA or Three Gun (to name a few of the different games). If you have a G19 then one of the full size Glocks might be a good idea.

Personally I like the full size Sig P320; they announced a five inch Competition Model earlier this year that might be worth waiting for.

I prefer a full size 1911 in 9mm for IDPA & speed steel.

If your just wanting to have fun. Run what you brung. If you want to get serious the CZ over the glock..

This...

While I love my BHP's you are definitely limited in class selection. i.e. USPSA L10 is the only class you could be compete on the up and up. Otherwise you'd be severely handicapped.

I would go with the Phantom. I like the way CZs fit me better than I do Glocks but either would suffice for your needs.

I am shooting a Steyr L9-A1 at a monthly local range competition that is modeled after scenarios presented in IDPA and USPSA type events. I've owned it a little over two years. Joined the club and started attending this event last year. Just last month I decided my aging eyes aren't effectively using the stock trapezoid sights so I dumped them for a set of Tru-Glo TFX.

That and a very minor trigger mod had me shooting better than 50% of the class at the first meet this year.
