Favorite non big game animals to hunt?

Probably squirrels and wabbits.
I like to cook and eat them.
Aside from that, I'd say the
assorted varmints that always
need controlling. People got
reluctant to do pest control in
the years that I've been alive for
whatever reason

Probably squirrel nowadays although I haven't done much the last few years. Itching to get back into it more. Years ago it was woodchuck hunting but around me they seem to have become somewhat of an endangered species. I think that's from the increased fox population and the proliferation of coyotes. Young woodchucks are easy pickings for fox & coyote. Rabbits have been real scarce for years also but seem to be making a comeback.

#1- long range prairie dogs, which I only got to do once, #2 doves- lots of shooting, even though I consistently look foolish with my success rate.

I love hunting Forest grouse. With a 22 while deer hunting, or with a single shot while wandering in the woods, they are awesome. Rabbit is fun too, but I haven't spent anywhere near enough time small game hunting since my kids were born. Gotta get back to it. My son got a Forest grouse this last season, and now he's addicted too.

The last time I went dove hunting there were 30 or 40 of us in the field. That field sounded like the D-day morning bombardment whenever a dove would fly across and most of the time it kept flying. We did enjoy it when we hit one, but our average was not worth a darn. Now walking the powerlines and jumping them we had better success, especially with a bird dog to do the work for us.

My other favorite small game is tree rat hunting with my buddies. We would either limit out or strike out depending on the day and time of season.

I have done lots of squirrel hunting. If my Mrs would be the least bit interested in cooking squirrel...I would be seriously into it.
My Savage 24 in 22lr/410 is my favorite squirrel gun.
I have taken them with almost every legal means.
22 pistol. 32 Caplock. 45 flinter. 22 rifles. Shotguns. Even took one with a bow.
I wantvto use my 22 pellet rifle sometime soon. It's perfectly capable.

I've never shot a squirrel or eaten one, just not really popular small game in the North West. Probably because most are pine squirrels, which is a very small squirrel. Don't really see any grays unless you are near or in civilization/towns. But, I'd not hesitate if I were to make an "unexpected overnight-couple day stay on some mountainside. Grouse or snowshoe rabbit would be preferred of course.

I like pheasants - both for hunting and for eating. However, between the wife and I, we killed right at 500 ground squirrels over on our friend's ranch last spring.
We've never really thought of ground squirrel shooting as "hunting" though. What we did last spring was more like "exterminating," and our rancher friends thanked us for doing it. I'm pretty sure the buzzards did too. ;)

Man, you must have a generous limit on grouse. I only take two at a time as that is plenty for a meal for me. Yes sometimes you can almost step on them. I prefer to get them with a pistol, rather than a shotgun.

I've been known to chase tree rats from time to time.

I'd love to try rabbit hunting with hounds. I imagine that's a great time. Not to mention, rabbit is one of the most delicious critters in the woods.
I've shot a few while squirrel hunting (the seasons overlap here), but never set out to just go rabbit hunting.

If it's small game for me it's waterfowl, preferably ducks but if the geese are piling into a spot it's incredibly fun as well. Goose pastrami has turned my whole family around on them it's really tasty. There's something about a flock of late season birds circling the decoys that is matched by a few things in the wild. Like a bull elk bugling or a turkey gobbling in your face, my issue is I love all of them.
