Favorite Steel for a Knife and Why?

I prefer 1095 and Bucks 420HC.

Also whatever Opinels mystery carbon steel is. 1075? Anyhow, it slices like a razor blade.

I just picked up my first knife in O1, a Great Eastern Cutler Bull Nose in OD linen micarta. I am very impressed with the factory edge. I have never seen a pocket knife that comes with an edge like this. I get the impression that O1 is a very good choice, no wonder Randall uses it.

I have to agree about the Opinels! I'm never without an Opinel on my person. Easy to sharpen, rugged, and the prices are still reasonable. I like the carbon steel versions and use yellow mustard to "patina" the blade on a new one.

I'm not a steel expert, and understand that blade geometry and heat treat affect performance as much as anything, but I've had great luck with D2 for hunting blades, and I like Kershaw's Sandvik steel in their US made folders.

I've owned many different blade steels over the years. My hands down favorite in CPM M4.
It takes a very keen edge and really holds it. I've also had great knives with VG-10 and 154CM. Unlike many thread respondents, I have no love for D2. Its the one steel that is a non-starter for me.
