I just purchased 20 5 round boxes for my new 870P magnum. These shells ARE NOT CHEAP ($7 a box at Cabela's).

One of the boxes only had 3 shells in it, although that could have been the vendor's fault.

However, two or three of the boxes (of the ones I have checked so far) had poorly crimped shells that resulted in the white buffering grains spilling all over the place. I expect better quality control from shells that cost $1.40 each.

Anyone else experienced this problem before?

I had the exact same problem. Bought a police 870 that came with that same ammo. Expected with the money that i paid and the reputation of the ammo and shotgun that i would get my values worth.

After about 15 rounds it stopped feeding. was pissed at the 870 at first but noticed all the foam everywhere. when i got it home the shell crimp was way open. the foam got stuck between the shell and the mag tube and prevents feeding. Had to remove the mag tube cap and push them out.

i have 120 rounds of this stuff and about 10 or more have crappy crimps. enough so that if the shell is facing down it will pour out a stream of foam pellets. this happening in the mag tube is bad news. i expected much more from federal as well. i will not be buying that particular ammo again. if i buy anything federal it will only be after inspecting each shell.

the foam gets static as well. so if it gets inside the receiver it will not blow out easily or at all. and if you are the type to over oil i can imagine it will just stick everywhere.

i am going to overhaul my 870 and with some stuff so i will be stripping it down and giving it a good cleaning to get the foam that is still in the receiver.

the ammo with the open crimps will be manually loaded and shot out. at least i can rely on it as range ammo. definitely not being stored at home though.

taught me a great lesson in not relying on the brand and to take it to the range and shoot at least 50-100 rounds with no issues before having confidence in it.

happy shooting.

:) This is an argument to buy yourself a single-shot shotgun! They'll eat the stuff that you don't want gumming up your pumps and autos.

That was one reason I switched to Brennekes. The Federal slugs were ok but... the weapons ate them with some... choking as it were.
