I have loaded some test rounds and I'm having some feeding issues. My recipe is 6.9 of WSF with the 185s seated at a OAL of 1.155-1.165. I have tried them in 2 different 1911s and they both fail to feed properly and the slides run the rounds into the top of the chamber. I'm thinking of running another test run at 7.0-7.2gns of WSF with an OAL of 1.185 do you think the longer OAL will help with the problems? Any suggestions?

Maybe too long already.

Hornady book says 1.135" OAL.

And if you seat a SWC long, the full diameter part sticking out of the case is going to jam into the rifling if it does feed.

Try that.

On the other hand, a lot of 1911's & magazines just don't like the short 185 grain bullets like that. The 200 grain SWC is often a better choice as the longer nose contacts the barrel hood during feeding at about the same place the 230 JRN they were designed for.

+1 on 1.135 OAL. Also chamber check your reloaded rounds. If it does not drop in and drop out and go in to be flush, you have other issues.

I am new at reloading and had loaded a couple test runs or 230 gr FMJ RN and they worked great. I then loaded 10 rounds of 185 gr FMJ SWC and could not get the first round to feed. They all passed the plunk test. I pulled the barrel again and it appeared that at the angle chamber entry, the mouth of the brass was hitting the top of the chamber and hanging the round. So I cranked in a little taper crimp and went back to the range. Nothing got better. All ten rounds failed to load. Talked to a couple of range officers and they agreed with above post that some 1911 just don't like SWC. I posted the remaining 85 or so that I had and gave them away in the pay it forward thread on this forum.
