I just purchased two hand guns over the net that I have wanted for a long time. The first is a glock 35 and the second was a Ruger Security Six. I had them both shipped to my FFL this past week and I picked them up today. Did I raise a flag by getting two handguns at the same time? My FFl dealer mentioned something about "most people stagger their handgun purchases". Have I done something to raise atttention to myself that I should not have? This is the first time to post so please bear with my ignorance... Mr, Plinker

(3) (A) Each licensee shall prepare a report of multiple sales or other dispositions whenever the licensee sells or otherwise disposes of, at one time or during any five consecutive business days, two or more pistols, or revolvers, or any combination of pistols and revolvers totaling two or more, to an unlicensed person. The report shall be prepared on a form specified by the Attorney General and forwarded to the office specified thereon and to the department of State police or State law enforcement agency of the State or local law enforcement agency of the local jurisdiction in which the sale or other disposition took place, not later than the close of business on the day that the multiple sale or other disposition occurs.

You're screwed.

Just kidding! But the above requirement is why the FFL said that some people would choose to stagger their purchases. I've done two in one day and nothing has happened so far - no police or BATFE knocking on my door. I don't worry about it.

I picked up 5 at once from my FFL. He didn't even bat an eye. He is holding a few more for me as we speak. I can't wait to get home and pick up my new babies.

If you are the type that is worried about the gov't collecting information about your guns:

When you buy one handgun, they run a background check, or in some states if you have a concealed permit you get to skip the background check.

When the dealer runs a background check, your name, race, date of birth, and state of residence are transmitted to the FBI computer to see if you have any felonies or misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence. The gun make, model, serial number, and caliber are never transferred to the computer, and neither is your address or Driver License number.

If you buy 2 handguns from the same dealer within 5 business days, he fills out extra paperwork. This paperwork gets faxed to the ATF. It contains your name, date of birth, race, address, drivers license number, place of birth, and the make, model, serial number, and caliber of the guns you bought.

So if you are the type that worries about the gov't keeping a database of exactly what guns you have, you stagger your multiple handgun purchases to avoid the extra paperwork.

There's a difference between a 4473 and a report of multiple sale.
The gov't is barred from keeping a database of 4473s. And I reasonably believe they don't.
They are not barred from keeping a databse of report of multiple sales, and I am pretty certain they do.
One multiple sale isn't going to raise any alarms. But the gov't does know you bought them and have those on record.

as long as they were purchassed at the same time you are good to go.
NICS check goes by transaction not by gun, so you can buy 500 guns at once as long as your buy them at the same time.

Multiple handgun sales may also be banned in some of the "one gun a month" states, though there are usually some exceptions. Even if the buyer falls under the exceptions, the dealer would still have to notify BATFE.

My FFL guy would kill me for all that paperwork, if I bought 500 pistols at once.

Long guns, yes, buy all you want, one call to NICS does it all.

2 handguns or more in a 5 day period triggers the "multiple handgun sales report" mentioned above.

I would just charge extra. I had a guy buy 5 revolvers last week. Big PITA but that doesn't happen very often so I guess it's OK.
The bad parts are the requirement to fax/mail the multiple form to ATF on the same day as the sale and the requirement to send a copy to CLEO. I am reasonably sure CLEO uses the forms to line birdcages with.
