My son wants to send me his SKS from NYS to me in ME.
The LGS that I (infrequently) go to charges $ 50 !!
Is there a cheaper alternative? Cabelas, maybe? Do they even do this-maybe from a NYS store to the one in Scarborough?
Just checking for options as $50 transfer fee (on my end only- he has his end covered) seems like a lot for a $300 rifle.
He also has @ 200 rounds of ammo- could this come in the same "package" or is that a whole separate deal?

Shop around for FFLs in your area. I mostly find them charging 20-30 on average. I assume the 50 charge doesn't include shipping?

I routinely pay $30, $50 is on the high side, just call around. You may find that's average in your area.

As far as the ammo, that has to do with the shipping cost, whatever UPS or FedEx charges, has nothing to do with the firearm transfer fee.

Transfers here run from $20 to $35. Maybe I should go up in price if they get that much in New York, but then it is New York.

As for shipping ammo. it needs to ship UPS or Fedex and cannot be shipped with the gun.

My FFL charges $15 dollars , most here charge $20 to $30 dollars . Some of the LGS charge $50 to $75 dollars .

Maybe now you understand while "Universal" background checks is anti-gun harassment of gun owners.

Around here it pretty easy to find transfers for $20-25.

I get transfers for $30, but when I inquired with a local place about the cost of shipping a firearm (drop off firearm, give address, let them handle it), they quoted me between $80 and $150, depending on the size of the firearm. (!!!)

I couldn't believe it.

The closest one to me charges $45, but he's quick and professional and the only one in town that will actually call you when the thing comes in. There's a reason the other guys come and go.
He also discounts multiple ones and hardly makes a profit if you have him ship anything from necessity or convenience, so... give and take.

I asked another of the 'big' private shops, and they quoted me $80. I openly laughed all the way out the door.

Shipping a firearm is always expensive through the LGS for me, but receiving one...$20 at my favorite LGS, with CCW permit. It's $25 if you don't have a permit...did I mention they do permit classes?? :)

I don't believe you've got that right.. It reads to me that it's his receiving FFL in Maine who is doing the overcharging, not NY.

When you DO find someone to do the transfer cheaper, make a point to call the first guy and tell him you won't be using him...And why.

A couple LGS around here charge $25, and that is what I paid last year. A friend was quoted $60 at Gander.

Around here it's $20 to $25. A few of the shops don't charge me from time to time. I did have to pay $110 on a transfer last year, but it was for 10 stripped and two complete AR lowers.

Have you tried KTP in Kittery or Howels in Gray as they are the biggies in your area. Not sure where you are as your avatar does not show general location. At least a couple members, SSNvet and ruger bob live in southern Maine, might be able to PM them for options. There are other LGS close by as well but the names allude me just now. My local guys charge between $20 and $35 for an inbound transfer. $50 at Maine Military at last check---Gotta pay for that new indoor range.;) You should be able to do better. Good luck.

My guy charges $20. I've been quoted as high as $65. I haven't used them, but I've been told that a local Pawn Shop near-by charges $15.

BTW: check with Pawn Shops near you for what they charge. Since guns are not their primary business, they may cut you a deal for "easy money".

Competition gets the prices lower. If there's no other FFL for a considerable distance than that shop can probably get away with an even higher fee. There's enough shops around me that I wouldn't have to pay more than $25 unless I wanted to.

The FFL I tend to use charges $25, but the 3 closest LGS all charge $35 with a couple more in the area charging $50. In the Bay Area, they commonly charge $70-$150.

As a general rule, your least expensive transfer fees will be at a Pawn shop
