I've been shooting steel challenge matches with my 22 pistol and I want to try a fiber optic front sight on it. What diameter are shooters running, and what sight picture do you use? No one makes a sight for the gun so it'll be a custom proposition. I can make a base and install one of these on top of it:

It's 1/2" long and has a .100" fiber rod. My stock front sight is .125" wide. Or should I look for a .125" wide bead?

And what's your sight picture? Bead centered in the rear sight notch and sighted so the bead covers your POI area? Or do you sight it so the POI is at the top of the bead, the same as iron sights?

my favorite fiber optic setup I've ever used was on a friend of mines SP-01 Shadow...it had a red front dot, and a matte black U shaped rear sight...very fast set up, sighted to hit where the dot was placed for fast action shooting games

I shot a local falling steel match with it and even though i had never ever used that gun before, my time for the course was shockingly faster than me using my Glock

I thought you were shooting 22:evil:. I would not put fiber optics front and rear. Way too busy and you will spend precious seconds trying to line them up. Definitely up front. Shooting PCCA with a 3" DW, I use one up front and factory rear. Amazing.

What kind/make/model 22?

It's a Hi Standard Victor w/ rib. Yes, I planned on putting a fiber sight just on the front and use the factory rear. If I like the setup I'll put on on my 1911 but that's easy - they're readily available.

I have horrible astigmatism. In fading light, I hate my fiber optic front sight. In fading light, the front sight becomes about twice the size it really is for me and my astigmatism affected eyeballs. In broad daylight, it is sharp, crisp and fast to acquire. Once the sun goes down, it and a regular sight are equally useless. :)

A thin, plain, black front post is better for fine target work. The FO sight just gives me a slightly faster sight acquisition. I'll probably go back to the all black setup.

I'll second the notion of others that FO rear sights just make the sight picture too busy. A plain black rear, preferably wide and with a U shaped notch make for the fastest and easiest to use rear sights.

If it weren't for that astigmatism issue, I'd love a thin FO front post. As it is, it just frustrates me in the fading hours during sunset. I'd prefer a gold bead, brass bead (polish it with some mothers to get something REALLY eye catching) or just a plain black sight.

I wouldn't use the sight you linked on a pistol. That dot is going to be enormous and the outline of the front sight should be square.

I think most "action pistol" fiber front sights use a .040 fiber optic rod.

I agree. That is exactly my issue. In dim light I can no longer see a square outline, just a green blob.
