... so much discussion over 922r and people make it sound so complicated with endless discussion and calculators. It's not that complicated. In regards to the AK, if you an count to "6", you can understand 922r.

Ak style is the least of the reasons to convert the gun. It is a performance modification first and foremost. Conversion yields a gun that is dramatically improved in at least the following areas: Balance, Ergonomics, and Trigger. These alone are reason enough to convert the gun. Gaining 922r compliance to run the best available higher capacity AK mags is another great benefit.

I have read all about the advantages of converting a Saiga Sporter to the AK47 style. Maybe one of these days my interest will change and I will pursue your suggestion.

I humbly suggest rather than simply reading about it you try and get some trigger time with each. Reading about it doesn't really give one a sense of what a dramatic difference exists between the two. Just holding them and dry firing gives some indication. However, running through a bunch of realistic tasks with each is truly illuminating. Even more so if you can add stress and an objective means of measurement. I like a shot timer and accounting for accuracy.

So your learned opinion is simply adding a AK mags that holds more than 10 rounds is not legal without exchanging another countable part for one made in the USA. That is the question I asked although in a manner which you and others could not understand.

I understood that is what you were trying to ask. As I stated above, adding a magazine that holds over ten rounds to a saiga makes it be a weapon that would not be legally importable. As such 922r says you cannot assemble such a weapon. There is a very strong argument that inserting the magazine constitutes assembly, legally speaking anyways. As such you must have 10 or fewer countable parts. If the 30 round magazine has a follower, body, and floor plate made in the US then you would need to remove one more foreign countable part. It is my opinion that for most folks removing the stock hand guard and adding a US made hand guard would be the easiest. There is is still the issue of whether the saiga has a countable sear. If it does you would need to swap another part. This is what I personally would do. Its cheap insurance. I personally would change the piston (assuming I refuse to do change the fire control group and stock). I believe it is the next easiest (although some people might find doing the basic conversion even easier.

BTW the chart in the post above may be misleading. It shows a parts count of 17. However, a factory saiga has no pistol grip, nor muzzle device. As I stated earlier, people debate about whether there is a sear. If you say it has a countable sear the factory rifle has 15 if not then it has 14 countable parts. If you add a muzzle device or a pistol grip then you must of course adjust your count. Using US made muzzle devices and pistol grips keeps the count the same.

. . . could I trouble to ask you for your experience in the area with conversion of Saiga Sporters?

Are you asking for my "credentials" or are you asking for information on how to do it?

If it is the former, you hardly need them, I have provided you with the relevant code sections and regulations. You can simply look them up and determine for your self if that is what the law states. As for the parts count you can either A) take apart the rifle and look at what parts are in it or B) find a trust worth parts diagram and see what parts are in it. C) contact the BATF and ask them what countable parts a saiga rifle has.

If you have a question about "converting" saiga rifles or shotguns, I would be happy to do my best to provide an answer if I am able to.

JFtheGR8,

I apologize for high jacking your thread. I should have started a new thread which I have done at;

No problem. I had many of the same questions when I started this endeavor. I researched it on my own so if I ran afoul of the law I would only have myself to blame.

Hey what's the forend you have on there with the picatinny under? I'm trying to find something that will fit my converted saiga 7.62x39 real well but allow me to have a vertical foregrip and a spot for an extended eye relief dot. The "common fit" stuff I've found so far just hasn't worked!

Edit: Nevermind, I'm an un-observant fool. I just noticed the "I like the Tapco Intrafuse hand guard"

duh.... :/
