I never was sold on 223/5.56 ammo in an AR. a friend talked to me about his 300 black out. Only need to change the upper he said. Well, I went and ordered one with a 16-inch barrel and 1/8 twist.
I don't use a suppressor. What would be a good all-around bullet weight? Any suggestions?
Just ordered it last night. Hope it is an easy change out.

125gr is pretty common, 147gr is what you'll see the most super sonic plinking grade ammo in.

There's also a few 110gr loads.

What's the purpose of your 300blk? It'll all punch paper about the same.

Punch paper most. House defense gun. I have been wanting to try a pig hunt.

Well, for just muck’n around on the range I load 55gr FMJBT’s. For “proper” work, I prefer the 69gr & 75gr SMK’s. Oh, oh, oh…. My bad. You don’t like 223 for some reason:thumbdown: But ok..

Yeah…. 125gr. About your only option. Most guys like the 300 whisper… uhh, I mean AAC, because they like playing with “Noise-Eliminaterors”! So the 220gr are popular because they are Oh so slow, making them super-dee-duper hush-hush! Like a Ninja wearing slippers! Other than that, pretty much have 110, 125 & 150. Couple others around those 3, but they are the norm. 125gr make the most sense. Give the best velocity/for weight of them.

The 150gr stuff will also be the cheapest of the cheap, and have all the issues that typical come with cheap ammo.

125gr is probably the best general purpose stuff.

My Blackouts eat a steady diet of 147-150gr FMJ bulk pulls. For a short-ish rifle/longer-than-pistol-range weapon, it's perfect. If I was loading for social work, I'd use 125gr Speer "deep dish" hollowpoints, because I use them in my 7.62x40WT.

Be aware that most .308 expanding bullets won't expand at .300BO velocity.

Hope it is an easy change out.
It is. So easy in fact, be absolutely certain a 300 magazine doesn’t make it to your 5.56 upper.
It will chamber it readily, but the .308 bullet won’t like trying to go down a .223 bore.
I keep my 300Blackout in red Lancer AWM magazines to separate them. A slightly different color to me and anyone else hopefully gets the “Danger=Red” theme.

Even without a suppressor, the heavier ones are quieter. I was pleasantly surprised when my Blackout pistol was no louder than my .22 rifles the day I was using Remington SubSonic 220 hollow points. The back pressure from my suppressor actually made it louder to my ear through the action port with the same ammunition.
Don’t underestimate the quiet potential with an unsuppressed sixteen inch barrel and subs. By the time it exits it should be quite nice.:)

The Barnes Vor-Tx 110 was amazing, the single box I bought to try supers in it.
Jugs of water, poof. Much more impressive than the double the weight subs. They had better be for the price.
Of course, the subs put that hole through six in a row, not just the one.

Were I more wealthy, and more attached to the Blackout, I’d try some Maker Rex bullets that @mcb endorses so joyfully.
They look wonderfully devastating!

For me 300 BO had become primarily a subsonic suppressed gun. I have a 16-inch, 9-inch, and 5-inch. The 16 inch does not get shot much recently since most of my shooting is subsonic and you don't need the long barrel for that.

Long story short, yesterday I was out at the hunting property doing some work. Brought the metal detector along. Recovered the bullet from the Armadillo I killed back in early June. I had marked the spot and so finding and all copper bullet with a metal detector is really easy.

This is the recovered 220gr Maker Rex bullet. It went through the armadillo tail to head and I recovered it after it went through about another 8-12 inches of soft forest floor. 100% weight retention with excellent expansion despite the low velocity.

Left is the 220 gr Maker Rex unfired, Right is my plinking rounds a 220gr Berry's Spire Point copper plated lead bullet. As you can see the all copper construction takes up a lot more volume compared to a lead core bullet.
