You have a strange definition of what 'does not work' means.
I still take issue with your contention about the object at rest. Clearly, the springs were strong enough to keep the latch engaged, negating the 'object at rest' argument.
Mechanically, the 3rd latch functioned perfectly.
In other words, it worked.
Just because it did not contribute to accuracy, strength, or durability does not mean it did not work.
It was discontinued from a cost standpoint, nothing else.
