Is it legal to give family members that are residents of a different state a handgun w/o having transfer paper work completed? My father and I live in neighboring states. We both have a variety of handguns that we like to shoot and carry. When we still lived in the same state we would periodically swap guns just to enjoy different firearms from each others collection. Now that we live in separate states, not sure if this is legal w/o the transfer paperwork being completed. Probably won't do it if we have to fill out the transfer paperwork as the gun swaps usually are only for 6-12 months, then swap for something else.

Would appreciate some clarification. I didn't see anything specifically regarding this so it appears to me as if it's not legal, just checking to be certain.

Thanks,

David

This is very dependent on the laws of the two states.

Not when it is against Federal law.

Permenant transfer is prohibited in Federal law without transferring via an FFL. Temporary loaning is allowed.
