Has anyone taken any firearms training in either Virginia or West Virginia specifaly a tactical carbine or handgun class, if so where was the class, what was your experiance like, would you recommend it to anyone else, how much did it cost, is there another one coming up ? Thanks for your input

Storm Mountain Training Center

Class prices are on the web site.

I've taken Handgun II and Handgun III, Long Range Rifle I, High-Risk Personnel, and a few others. Instruction was great, the advanced classes are definitely not "NRA" style training if you know what I mean.

My only recommendation if you take one of there classes is to take 10-20% more ammo than is stated on the course requirement.

I have been looking at the Pat Goodales class and was wondering if anyone has taken the class

Yes, I have. He's a very good teacher, willing to explain, willing to help, knowledgeable, personable, and his staff are of similar make up. It is very hard to not have fun at his class(es) no matter how hard you're actually working.

He has also been giving select VCDL members some tailored training. I would highly recommend Pat as a firearms trainer without hesitation.

I did practical handgun 1+2 last summer with Pat and can attest to his high level of instruction.

If you go, be prepared to train hard.

Heck, we're practically part-time neighbors. I have a camp in Monroe County.
Near Craig or Giles county... If your familiar with the buffalo farm near Wateville thats about 20 minutes up rt18 from me as well.. I do alot of my hunting up that way.. I live in Covington if you know where that is...

I live in Covington if you know where that is...

I know Covington well......and know that smell :p

Made use of the nice folks at the ammo counter at Wally World many times and make it a point to stop at the little gas station right off of exit 10 for snacks for the simple reason they have the big sign for the Allegheny Gun Club in the parking lot.

I have to cruise all of the way down to Gap Mills to get to my place.

Thats Stonewall service station.. The gun club is about 1 mile up the other fork you dont take and then turn right and about 1 mile up that road.. I have contemplated joining them.. closed range with steel plates... Sounds nice for 25 bucks a year
Have you ever went to Humpback bridge.. Its about 1 1/2 miles up the road from where you get off the exit (opposite of the way you go to Gap Mills)... Nice scenic place...
If i get membership in the club soon or if you want to join up at a national forrest range sometime give me a pm when your comming through.. The national forrest range is exit 16 (i think.. Its the hospital exit.. If you come in going down 64 west its the 4th exit before the one you take).. Let me know and we can arrange a meet up..

Also you go near Pats place on your way to Gap Mills
When you take the 2nd left fork to continue up tword Gap Mills he lives a few miles up the right fork back tword the interstate

John,

I went up to that range at Low Moor a while back to see what it looked like. Nice place for a state range.

Isn't Pat's house the really nice one you can see from the interstate coming from Lewisburg? I thought one of the instructors said so.

Pat's range is about 1/2 mile from my folks property just above Ft Spring/Alderson. I can here them shooting if I'm working up there.

Im not sure if that one is his or not... Havent ever really paid that much attention... :(

That state range is where i shoot a good bit... Pretty good for the most part.. We are trying to get them to put a well in with the old style pump handles... Just to offer a drink or a eye wash if needed...
I know where Pats range is but have never been to it... My late step dad was born and raised in Alderson.. He and i used to go over to the bar on the right backed up to the river (if i remember right its wood faced) on the road to the range to watch WVU football games (although i am a FSU nut :D)... May be just a bit past it... Forget the name of it off hand.. He died about 6 years ago and i havent been back since the funeral...

And again if you ever want to meet up on your way through give me a shout...

Larry Vickers frequently conducts tactical carbine and handgun classes in South Hill, VA.

First rate.

Fuller training schedule here:

Blackwater in nearby Moyock, NC also gets high marks.

Thanks for the info 30 cal slob. Im only 30mintues from South Hill, and I had no idea there is any type of training like this around here.
I checked the m4carbine.net site, and the range they use is actually in Lawrenceville VA. Bout 15-20minutes East of SouthHill, but basically the only lodging for travelers is in South Hill or Emporia which is alil farther away(25miles). I actually drive past the range a few times a week for work, never been to it b/c its off the road and the gates usually locked.
I may try to get in the Pistol 1 class in Sept, Id rather do a basic class first but its not offered around here.

Thanks again,
Matt

You might want to check out the offerings from BSR out at Summit Point, WV (about 15 miles from Winchester, VA)
http://www.bsr-inc.com/ Although they do a lot of vehicle based training, they also do firearms training & include armed force in some of the vehicle training scenerios.

Click on "Specialty Training Modules" for info on firearms training. If memory serves (based on the last time I saw a class & price list a couple of years back), the basic handguns course was in the $250 range plus you were expected to bring something like 600 rounds with you for your use during the class.

The blurb on the Advanced Tactical Firearms component:
This course will advance the shooter with basic skill to a higher level. The student will learn to combine tactics with advanced shooting techniques to develop the winning edge in combat shooting situations. This course can be conducted with handguns, submachine guns, assault rifles or a combination of weapons. These courses are tailored to the client's specific requirements and will vary in duration to meet those specific needs. We also have the ability to do training vehicle assaults, live fire vehicle evacuations and multiple room force-on-force CQC (Simmunitions Only).

DZL HOG - that's right I forgot the range is something like 14 miles East of South Hill proper. IIRC there is a McDonald's just a few miles east of the range itself (if you're thinking your only nearby lunch option).

South Hill is very convenient - plenty of lodging, dining, and stores (Wal-Mart came in handy when I ran low on cleaning supplies).

Larry's courses are top-notch and I like that you can fit most of his classes into Sat/Sun.

I know that McDs all too well. I eat there several times a week. I work in Lawrenceville, and live about 10-15minutes South of Lawrenceville. But go just past McD take the next exit, turn left and go up in town theres a Hardees, Subway, a Italian pizza place, new Mexican place, and a couple other local owned restaurants.
But it is way more/better options in South Hill, the new Super Walmart is nice. Dont know when the last time you were down this way, they built it right next to the old one.

As somebody said earlier in the thread, Steve Silverman, who runs Firearms Research and Instruction (www.F-R-I.com) occasionally teaches classes at the Beckley Gun Club. He'll be teaching his Level IV class Wednesday May 21 through Sunday May 25 in Beckley. I've taken his Level II/III, Level IV, and Carbine classes, and I cannot say enough good things about him. Contact me privately if you have any questions.
