THe first handgun I had use of for a couple of years
was a Hi-Standard Dura-Matic. The Dura-Matic was
a Semi-Auto blowback .22 LR. I visited my Aunt in
September and mentioned some of the handguns
I have acquired in recent years. She brought out what
she called her 'little' gun. She brought it out and all
the years rolled back. IT was the Dura-Matic. It was
nice handling the handgun I cut my teeth on once more.
IT will be handed down to her son. My uncle let me use
it for a couple of years and then took it back because his
son was getting of age to experience it. I then took
money I had at age 14 mowing lawns and my Dad matched it
and got a S & W Model 18 so I learned the revolver after
starting with a Semi-Auto.
Getting back to the Hi-Standard and handling it after 40
years. I pulled the slide back and was surprized to find
that the safety was in the position where you find the slide
lock/release on a 1911. The safety was on the
TH side of the frame opposite the the slide lock/release
All I thought was what a weird set up for the controls.
The DA Model 18 S & W was much simpler in operation
and for a first time handgunner or first gun period is much
easier to operate.
