I got to the range today with my new FNX-9. Let me start out by saying that it's a keeper.
Temperatures were in the mid 30s so I hadn't planned to stay too long. I don't like wearing gloves but my hands get cold easily. I took 100 rounds of Sellier & Bellot 115 grs FMJ just in case, but only planned to use half that just to try out the pistol. I ended up doing all 100 rounds. I didn't want to stop even though I was cold. I was having fun.
I had zero failures of any type. The pistol worked as expected. I was pleasantly surprised at the recoil or lack thereof. The gun is polymer with a 4 inch barrel but only weighs 21.6 oz. I was afraid it was going to be snappy. It was not. I did not have my 9mm XDm with me but I'd say that the recoil is about the same, and that pistol weighs 32oz. with the 4.5 inch barrel.
I had read on the forums that some of the early examples of this gun had problems with the changeable backstraps moving down leaving a small gap at the top. Also some early models had probelms with the mags not staying in unless tapped forward after inserting. My pistol was test fired in April of 2010 so I was a little worried that it was one of the 'early' models. Both of these probelms were non existant in my gun. I have the larger but smoother backstrap installed.
I shot it as accurately as I do my other 9mm pistols. Which is to say that I'm continually working to control my flinching. When I can concentrate on that front sight and nothing else, I do pretty well. But that doesn't always happen. I was shooting two handed unsupported at 10 yards. I saved my best target which is pictured below. That was 5 shots measuring 1.75 inches from center to center of the farthest two shots. That's pretty good for me. The other targets were not as pretty. But I'm confident that the gun does it's part well. It's me that needs to step up my game.
So in conclusion, I'm real pleased with this pistol and am sure it will be taking many more trips to the range.
The more I'm reflecting on it, I REALLY like this gun.
