I got to the range today with my new FNX-9. Let me start out by saying that it's a keeper. :D

Temperatures were in the mid 30s so I hadn't planned to stay too long. I don't like wearing gloves but my hands get cold easily. I took 100 rounds of Sellier & Bellot 115 grs FMJ just in case, but only planned to use half that just to try out the pistol. I ended up doing all 100 rounds. I didn't want to stop even though I was cold. I was having fun.

I had zero failures of any type. The pistol worked as expected. I was pleasantly surprised at the recoil or lack thereof. The gun is polymer with a 4 inch barrel but only weighs 21.6 oz. I was afraid it was going to be snappy. It was not. I did not have my 9mm XDm with me but I'd say that the recoil is about the same, and that pistol weighs 32oz. with the 4.5 inch barrel.

I had read on the forums that some of the early examples of this gun had problems with the changeable backstraps moving down leaving a small gap at the top. Also some early models had probelms with the mags not staying in unless tapped forward after inserting. My pistol was test fired in April of 2010 so I was a little worried that it was one of the 'early' models. Both of these probelms were non existant in my gun. I have the larger but smoother backstrap installed.

I shot it as accurately as I do my other 9mm pistols. Which is to say that I'm continually working to control my flinching. When I can concentrate on that front sight and nothing else, I do pretty well. But that doesn't always happen. I was shooting two handed unsupported at 10 yards. I saved my best target which is pictured below. That was 5 shots measuring 1.75 inches from center to center of the farthest two shots. That's pretty good for me. The other targets were not as pretty. But I'm confident that the gun does it's part well. It's me that needs to step up my game.

So in conclusion, I'm real pleased with this pistol and am sure it will be taking many more trips to the range.

The more I'm reflecting on it, I REALLY like this gun.

how does it compare with your Springfield XD? how is the trigger pull in both DA & SA mode? I once handled a well used FNP 357 and the SA trigger was sweet. it felt like 4 lbs and crisp. sorry I didn't buy it but the LGS wanted over 6 benjamins for it!!

waiting for the FNX 357 to come out.

To be honest, I never shot it in double action yesterday. I know that dry fireing it a few times in DA the pull was pretty heavy. But the single action was, as you said, sweet. I really liked it. Smooth and I'd guess no more than 4 lbs.

I can't carry here in the People's Republic of Maryland, but this would make a real nice carry pistol. At 21 oz, it's not heavy at all. And I liked it at the range, so this thing is really impressing me.

Nice report and pics. It's sooooo odd that you never fired the pistol in Double Action though!!! :neener:

Do you have an opinion on which one is nicer to shoot, between this and the XDM?

The only thing about this gun that still has me a bit aprehensive, is the safety lever. I think I prefer a thumbs forward grip, but having never held one, I don't know if it's going to cause me any discomfort. I would prefer not to have to rest my thumb on top of the lever. What are your impressions about the ergonmics from that standpoint?

The safety was not a problem. I shoot thumbs forward and my right thumb (I'm right handed) was underneath the safety.

I'll have to compare to the XDm another time. Have to leave the house now.

Well that's good to hear. I really wish I could handle one myself, but I don't have massive hands, so I doubt it would cause me a problem if it didn't cause you one.

Yes. The FNX is supposed to be the next generation of the FNP. I don't really know the differences because I'm not familiar with the FNP.

Finally one I can answer

The differences between the FNP and the FNX is mostly cosmetic. The stipling on the grip is checkered and much more pronounced, the decocker/safety is plastic rather than metal (also, I'm pretty sure all FNX's have the safety/decocker while only the FNP USG had the safety/decocker), the slide has front cocking serrations and is squared at the muzzle end rather than rounded like the FNP. The magazine release is pear shaped rather than circular. And lastly, the magazines are different because the magazine catch is designed to hold the front of the magazine instead of on both sides like the FNP. This is why there were problems with having to push the magazine forward to seat it properly. I think I got everything there.

FN claims a lower bore axis on the FNX vs. the FNP for less recoil. I dunno, looks pretty close to me.

I really don't know if the bore axis is lower or not. I do know that for such a light weight gun it was no more snappy than my XDm or 229. I'm guessing maybe the axis is lower? Don't know.

For those who were looking for a comparison of the FNX to the XDm, at least trigger wise, I'd have to give the edge to the FNX. Of course that is a personal preference. I think that in SA mode, the FNX is pretty slick and I'm pretty sure that the pull is lighter than that of the XDm. It took me a little while to get used to the XDm trigger. I love my XDm, but I like the trigger better on the FNX. After I spend more time with the FNX it may give my XDm a run for it's money.

I have a FNP-9 and a FNX-40. When compared side by side you can see that the bore axis has been lowered fractionally on the FNX. But that little bit seem to have made a lot of difference. My FNX-40 is the lightest shooting .40s&w I've shot. I haven't compared the recoil of the two side by side (ah! an excuse to go to the range.) but I think they are pretty close. I'm very please with both guns.

That said, I'm a 1911 kind of guy (that means I tend to ride the thumb safety on my 1911s) so I did have problems with the de-cocker on the FNP-9 doing it's job when I didn't want it to, and ended up cutting off the lever on the left side. I haven't experience any problems with the FNX-40 safety/de-cocker and I do tend to ride it like I do a 1911 safety.

IMHO the FN line of pistols is incredibly overlooked by most shooters. I guess they don't advertise enough as I rarely see an ad for them. Reliability, accuracy, ergonomics, modestly priced, comes with three magazines - they have it all, IMHO. The only problem is that since they aren't wildly popular the after-market is kind of slim for them.

I was thinking about a holster for the FNX just for range use. (I can't carry in my home state) I've noticed that the holster that came with my 4.5 XDm seems to work for the FNX. It's a little tight but it works. Maybe I'll get the Fobus SG250 if I can't get the XDm to work easily.
