Five guns

I was recently asked by a friend of mine what guns should everybody have she set it at five so I replied remington 870 reminton 700/770 ruger 10-22 some form of ar - 15 and a pistol I said a glock because in my mind they are rock steady what guns would you suggest to a shooter on a budget in those catogories.

I've seen this question asked a few times, and it always widely varies. For me, my only purpose for guns is plinking, carry, and HD, and I want all of my guns to be suitable for personal protection. So I will never own a bolt-action rifle, a .22, etc.

If I were to do a catch-all when someone asked "what should I get for personal protection", I'd suggest a Glock 19 for carry/nightsand and a Mossberg 590 for HD. I own neither, but I think it's a good catch-all if the user wants to be told what to buy instead of figuring out what works for them.

It depends on what the situation is that limits you to those five guns. Is it just an attempt to dictate what a basic "home armory" should consist of? SHTF?

I would look at my requirements in this light... small game, large game, other game (birds), and SD.

So
.22 of your preference for small game
.223, 7.62x39, 30-.06 for large game (I assume we arent hunting elephants)
12 gauge shotgun
9mm, .40 or .45, your preference, we can and do argue the difference all day

An 870 is probably the best pump shotgun ever made but not the best shotgun ever made. Some people can afford a Benelli. It will do everything the 870 will do without requireing a manual action by the shooter between every shot.

3) 1911 .45acp
4) Savage 110 .270
5) Hawken .50 cal BP

I think this should cover any SD or hunting situation anywhere in NA.

I like, "two is one, one is none", and standardizing ammo. Reliability & durability are huge, as is functionality. If I have five guns, I want them to cover 1) concealed carry, 2) home defense, 3) breakdown of rule of law.

Two Ruger Mini 14s, two Walther PPS, and a Walther PPQ. Everything is .223/5.56, or 9mm.

No need for a large game hunting rifle in Ohio, not allowed to use them. Muzzleloader, shotgun slug or a handgun with at least a 5" barrel firing a straight wall cartridge of at .357 diameter. Your five gun selection is going to be dependant on what your shooting opportunites and/or needs are.

Given the parameters my choices for MY needs would be:
-ccw piece, Ruger LCR .38+p
-Handgun suitable for both defensive use and deer hunting. Maybe a Ruger GP100 6", .357, maybe a Glock 35 or 24 or a G20 w/ 6" barrel.
-Plinking, small game, informal target, Ruger 10/22 target topped with an Eotech and supplied with plenty of BX25's
-Defensive Rifle, varminter, CMP shooter. Rock River AR15 national match flattop w/ good scope in a quality QD mount.
-Shotgun, I'll stick to one for clays & wingshooting, Browning Cynergy o/u.

Those 5 would suit my needs quite well.

Practical to me:
Ruger 77/22 Mk II in all weather with v-bolt
Ruger Red Label 20g SxS
Marlin 1894 .357
S&W in either .38 spec or .357 for matching ammo with Marlin
Colt Python

Now alot of tactical people would be able to simply say:
Glock 19
1911
Moss 500 or 870
M-4 with bunch of uppers for caliber changes
Barrett M997

People and their tastes vary so widely, I never bother on specifics with recommendations but I will show them a few choices.

My list however

1. Current handgun XD-40
2. AK 74 Tantal
3. Remington Model 5
4. Remington 870 or 1100
5. My Tantal can cover this spot under NH law.

Only five?! Ok, for me it's mainly my 870 for hd, my savage .22lr for plinking and small game, my bersa for cc, and my s&w 9mm for nightstand duty (so the 870 doesn't get lonely), also I will be adding an ar as soon as the cash is saved up.

To dissect it: Shotgun, hunting rifle, pinker, tac rifle, and backup.

To a shooter on a budget, here's my opinion:

Shotgun: Remington 870
Hunter: Mosin-Nagant m1891/30
Plinker: Cricket 22
Tactical: SKS
Backup: Makarov PM in 9x18

If someone says that they can only have five handguns, it's either going to be because they really aren't into guns, but want to be prepared; or they are into guns (and want to be prepared), but are on a very limited budget.

Whether they fall into one category or the other, both have some common factors that would lead to, what I think, are some logical choices.

1. Remington 870 pump action shot gun. Easy to maintain and operate and can be used for close range defense or hunting.

2. Remington 700 or Savage equivalent bolt action rifle in .308. Again, easy to operate and maintain. Most can handle the recoil of a .308. Ammunition is easily obtainable and relatively inexpensive. The caliber is capable of hunting most larger game.

3. Smith or Ruger revolver with a 3 or 4" barrel. Again ease of maintenance and operation. Lower cost of operation.

4. .22 bolt action rifle. I'd probably go with a Savage, for all of the reasons above.

5. .22 revolver, although this could be cost prohibitive, considering that a Ruger auto would cost about half as much. An alternate #5 would be a Marlin lever action in 30/30, although this could be considered a dup for the .308 bolt gun.

I doubt that I ever make it to 5 guns simply because I own a few now with sentimental attachments and they will always hold a place. If I did have just 5, this is what they would be;

1. Remington 870
2. Colt 6920
3. Remington 700 .308. I'd take a Rem 700 over a Savage simply because of the new RTS
4. Glock 32. .357SIG is plenty for the woods around here and I could switch to 9mm for carry
5. .22lr rifle

All these decision and prioritizing! I can't wait until the "only 27 guns" threads comes out.

Well I own the first 4 of my list... That's not bad. I guess I could replace #5 with the Savage Axis .243 for now.

Remington 870, AR-15, Ruger 10/22, Glock 19, Remington 700 or other scoped .308 bolt gun. If I could add one more it would be a Ruger Mark III

These are based on weight, ammo availability, accuracy, dependability, and expected targets. Depending on circumstances, an AR-type .223/5.56 or Remington 700V .308 could replace the CZ, a Beretta 3901 12ga or Mossberg 500 12ga with two barrels for the LT-20, a Savage 17HMR for the 10/22, and a G35 for the M&P - but if I HAD to pick 5 to keep or take with me into a survival situation, those would be them.
The only one without an alternate is the G30 - that's one versatile bad boy! None of my 1911s, S&W wheelguns, or .22-250 Varminters makes the cut, even though I enjoy them (and the CZ) the most of any I own.
