Has anyone done the live fire portion to get a Florida CCW? Target type, distances, number of rounds and score to pass? I'm surprised they don't list it in the application PDF's.
Any help appreciated.

Military vet....just pay the filthy lucre.
Non vet....take a qualified CCW course. They have you burn some ammo to make sure you know which end of the weapon it comes out. Then pay the filthy lucre, and you become an honorary trained defender.

There is no "qualification", per se. What is required is what the instructor chooses to require. The state only requires that the applicant demonstrate the "safe discharge" of a firearm. One round will suffice for that. I've seen courses offered that have the gun discharged into a clearing barrel. In the early days of the statewide "shall-issue" law (enacted in 1987), some were using air guns until the state added the "firearm" requirement clarification.

I did not take a class for the CWFL because of my law enforcement background, so I haven't seen any firsthand.

From the statute..

A person who conducts a course pursuant to subparagraph 2., subparagraph 3., or subparagraph 7., or who, as an instructor, attests to the completion of such courses, must maintain records certifying that he or she observed the student safely handle and discharge the firearm in his or her physical presence and that the discharge of the firearm included live fire using a firearm and ammunition as defined in s. 790.001;..

I had taken several NRA courses at a members Gun club in another state. Those credentials and an electronic finger print were all I needed. No range qualification required.

Pretty sure most gun shops either offer a course to get “certified “ or know one to refer their customers to… Also remember hearing that some sheriff departments have a course but that would be a county by county proposition…

I did it at Bill Jackson's 20 something years ago & we shot 25 rounds at 15 feet or so.

A public range in Sarasota County, Knights Trail, Nokomis has several listings of individuals who run training courses for weapons safety and proficiency.
I see one or two several times a month most often with ladies.

Thanks for all the input. Sounds like basic NRA pistol cert , finger prints, photos and money is all I need. Now to find local FP & photo service. Thanks again.

Way back when I got mine it was nothing but sign some papers and shoot one round (22lr) Some places used blanks!

I think it is up to who gives the class.

Everybody passes. Even if you load your double stack backwards. Yep! Saw that and worse.
Not just in the free state of FL either.

Last I recall, passport-type photos taken at Walgreens were fine, and some LE agencies may still be doing the FP rollings. Also, many county tax collectors' offices can now process the application. In my day, you had to actually go to a state licensing office; there were only a handful throughout the state, the closest to me was fortunately only an hour away.

I used my DD214 (proof of honorable discharge). Which is sort of funny, since many people who served in the military never handled a handgun, let alone fired one in the performance of their duties. As I understand, some people in the navy and AF barely use a firearm at all during their time in.

I had passed the quals right before moving to Texas about three or four years ago in Pembroke Piines. It was just firing a few rounds and was absolutely laughable, Stevie Wonder would have passed.

I got a Florida CCW in 2004, and most of the "class" failed the
simulated (projection) shooting scenario, and missed too many
hits on the target - but they still were given a permit....

If you fail, you deserved to. Try to find the hardest class you can. Most are too easy.

Mine was:
Demonstrate proper handling. Safety levers, reholstering, etc.

Shooting from retension position. Extremely close target.

Same thing, but now including a draw.

7yards, draw and point shoot. 3 targets, 6 rounds.

20 yards, with sights. Same thing.

As I recall, the live fire portion of my FL CCW class had instructions that went something like this. "Starting with an empty weapon, load your firearm, fire 10 rounds. If 7 of 10 hit the target, and no rounds hit your neighbor or instructor, you pass"

When we moved to Florida from CT in 2016, it took a total of 15 minutes to do the paperwork for my carry permit. Showed my DD214, answered the questions on the computer, then printed on the scanner. It took 15 minutes because they had to put new toner in the scanner LOL.
4 days later I got the permit in the mail.

When I got my permit in CT me and a friend from work did the "class and training" during a lunch hour at a local gun store. He shot 3 and I shot the other 2 rubber bullets into a cardboard box in the office of the store using a 5 shot snubbie. What a joke.
We made it back to work within that hour.

If it is anything like here in SC, you would literally have to shoot the instructor to fail.

But seriously it is beyond easy and they don't even bother to check the targets.

We were told to bring 100 rounds of ammo. I shot 5 rounds at a 4' square of plywood 10 feet away and took the 95 others back home with me.
To my astonishment, a couple of folks failed to hit the plywood but still received certificates.
