Potentially have the opportunity to move to Florida (Brandon, specifically), and am just wonder how the laws are there. I've looked up what I could find, and doesn't seem like they are too bad, but is there anything I missed?

Probably not, its a fairly fair state when it comes to the 2A. Use common sense and be safe.

Thanks guys for the help,

Yoda, I take it your from the area? It's an odd situation, but long story short I believe we will be in Brandon, or the area right around there.

Arizona had good gunshows too. After coming back to Maine, everything here is just boring!

Plenty of gun shows, but they're not huge like other places.

Generally relaxed and fair gun laws.

Not many ranges around Brandon, I'm afraid, but there are a couple decent shops.

Easy to get your CCW, and you can keep it in the glovebox without.

True common-sense laws! :D If you shoot someone while they're commiting a violent felony, you can't be charged or sued for it.

Now if they would just allow carry at a college campus...

I've lived in FL (80s), VT, NY, MA, and WA. I've hit gun shows everywhere. NOTHING tops the gun shows in FL I went to around Tampa and Ocala. Maybe some of the big annual ones in Kansas and the like, but for regular stuff, FL shows were good back then, I can't imagine they are worse now.

Fl is a great state legally, the only thing that is negative are all the a) yankees that move down b) weather c) hurricanes and d) weather. Oh, did I mention the weather? ;)

Hey, now. I'm a yank by Florida standards. It's not where people are from, it's the fact that Florida sucks in idgits of all sorts, from everywhere.

To be fair, most of the native-born floridians are pretty low on the brain ladder. But I tend to think that of people in general. ;)

And, yeah, the weather's awful. I for one don't mind rain, but it was nice when I moved down here, and it was predictable--every day at 3PM, there's an hour or two of rain. Then it stops and the sun shines.

Now, it will shine in the morning, and suddenly it goes dark as night and rains for four days, because it hasn't rained at all for three months.

Oh, and seasons don't exist. In winter, it will be 55 one day, then 40, then 80, then 40 again. And the 80 will probably be the rainy one.

And, yearly, we have a few months of really nice weather, one in between that gets a little chilly, and then the rest of the year consists of 1) rain or 2) oh-my-god-its-hot, everything-is-sticky, what-smells-like-bacon-oh-god-its-my-back-get-out-of-the-car-with-its-dang-leather-seats.

Just get used to obnoxious people gabbering at you in either spanish or that godawful redneck accent, or cutting you off in traffic without any turn signals and then driving thirty miles an hour in a fifty-five, or the absolutely frightening things the geezers down here do, too. I've watched them drive up a one-lane off-ramp.

But we have decent gun laws!

Florida was, I think, the first of the "shall-issue" states, of those requiring permits, and also one of the first with one of the most effective laws for punishing those who criminally misuse firearms (the "10-20-life" law which is, essentially: show a gun while committing a crime, get ten, fire it, get twenty, hurt someone with it, go bye-bye for life.) So, it seems to do well for supporting all positive aspects of firearms ownership while trying to address the criminal element without chipping away at those rights. Pretty fair in my book.
We have two calendar seasons here: "summer", and "not summer". Of course, you'll also hear of tourist, hurricane, rainy, dry, and off, seasons..

Deus Machina, you are on thin ground! :) My better half is a solid cracker, and I am as close as you can get with out being kosher. Both college educated, both Fl proud. She can out shoot, and out think most men worldwide. WE both look down on the out-of-state-poor-driving-rude-tourists-and-transplants. :p.

Stay safe and have fun as always!

Bah! Being kosher would make you less of a Florida cracker. The things that make you more include a mullet. ;)

Never seen a yarmulke on top of one of those!

Can't say I'm fond of the tourists, but what point is there in hating the tourists for their driving habits? We have plenty of bad drivers of our own!

Seriously, I think turn signals cause accidents down here. The people behind speed up to get closer and stare trying to figure out what it is.

Most importantly you should purchase Jon Gutmacher book for everything legal related in regards to firearms:

Carry is almost totally banned without a permit (no OC) and carry without a permit is a felony offense. On the bright side, it's a shall-issue state and permits are not hard to get.

Ha!! +1

Thanks gentleman (and ladies if so happens to be the case).

I'm a Yankee by standards, and one of those 21 yr olds, that "must be a punk kid because he's 21" but I'll blame my upbringing for turning me into a respectful being:D.

Doesn't sound too too bad. I lived in Cuba for a while when I was younger. I dislike rain and humidity, so I know its going to take a while to get used to that again. Good to know about the ccw, and good to see plenty of others around the area!

How is the area itself? Brandon? Lithia? I hear Tampa can get pretty ugly, but every place has its badspots.

Can't speak for Lithia, but I will say driving in Tampa sucks. One-way roads everywhere, so half your driving is making a loop around, and the rare two-ways give you no way to get to anything on the other side.

Word of advice: keep an eye out for pedestrians. No one knows about crosswalks down here.

Brandon's a decent place, especially near downtown. It's had a bit of a downturn because the 'bad' parts are so close to the better ones, but overall it's nice.

And another thing...!

Don't judge Florida by anything south of Ocala. In florida, the more south you go, the more north you get. Go to Miami, you might as well be in New York. You want to see the real south? Go to northern florida, or even better, to the Panhandle.

Floridans low on the brain ladder? You should see how the Yankees look to US! (BTW: i'm not from here, either.)

I met my wife in Florida. After chasing a lot of ditzes, I locked on the Florida girl in the Panhandle who kept a shotgun in her closet.

The panhandle is more like southern Alabama to be honest. I'm a northerner, but MD's gun laws weren't nearly as good.

I've lived in FL my whole life. I think the gun laws laws are fine. CCW's are easy to get, no stupid laws like an AWB or one-handgun-per-month. If you have a CCW, there's not even a waiting period.

Right--'downtown'. Read as: on the way to Tampa.

Around the mall and such. Decent place, but the ones that aren't aren't far.

And don't get me wrong, I've grown to love southerners. The people with the gentle drawl and that still respect people and call people 'sir' or 'ma'am'. The rednecks are a completely different matter. :)

Oh, and the people you guys think of when you think of yankees--the loud whiny guys from New York, Philadelphia, Chicago (if you personally consider that far west) and just about any large city in California?

Don't group all the northerners together; the rest of us yankees hate those guys, too. :p
