FMJ Vs Copper Clad?

I am in need of info from the learned scholars here.



What is the difference between FMJ and Copper Clad bullets? My resources for finding bullets to reload for .223 Rem have been slim. A LGS has a box of 500 copper clad 55 Gr bullets for $68. It works out to 14 cents per round. The Remington bulk I was getting for about 10 cents per round. I will be loading for my AR15 and using IMR 3031. I am using 22 grains to send a 55 gr bullet about 3000FPS. In concerns with using copper clad?

I think what you are asking is the differance between jacketed and plated bullets?

FMJ is a bullet type made with a copper jacket over a lead core.
It has a closed nose & open base.
It could be said it is copper clad.

A copper clad bullet?
Could be any conventional jacketed bullet of FMJ, SP, or HP design.
They have an open nose and a closed base.

Or it could be a copper plated bullet not suitable for full .223 velocity.

So, to answer your question, we need more info about the specific bullet, and who made it.

The box stated Copper Clad and it is what you described as a FMJ. The FMJ's I have been using from Sierra and Berger are covered in copper all over, even the base. I didn't know if I would have excessive copper build-up because the construction was different that FMJ.

I'm at a loss.

The only 55 grain Berger bullet I am aware of is not a FMJ.
It is a hollow-point match bullet with an open tip and closed base.

Sierra only makes one 55 grain FMJ bullet and it is closed on the tip and open on the base.
