FN Mauser

Nature Boy Good Choice! My first rifle I built is an old obendorf Mauser action .35 Whelen. Thing shoots lights out and really puts the hurt any deer that steps through the scope.

There’s no right (perhaps a few wrong) answers to caliber. I’d maybe do 7 Mauser with a high end barrel. Should be a shooter.

Or, since you’re into long range shooting, 6.5-284. Reach out and touch something

I know a couple guys that got Prairie dogs at 1,000 yards with 6.5-06. I suppose if you’re gong with something totally custom, it makes sense to get a non-standard caliber. If anything shooting wise makes sense.

Despite all the posts about cartridges longer than ?X57mm, with the cutout in the OP's receiver for the thumb while loading from stripper clips, some measurements are in order before planning on using that action for cartridges longer than ?X57mm.

There's a wealth of ?X57mm out there to consider from 6mm Remington, .257 Roberts, and 6.5X57mm through 9.3X57mm.

There are also plenty of ?X51mm cartridges to consider as well: .243 Winchester, .260 Remington, 7mm-08 Remington, .308 Winchester, etc.

I'd enjoy seeing the receiver used for something like a modern full stock (Mannlicher style) carbine with 20" barrel in 6.5X54mm Mannlicher-Schoenauer. JM2C.

Depending on the year made, FN made a change in the std. Mauser receivers in the 1950's where they have the lug raceways cut with a double broach compared with the older model. Believe the change was in the 1950's.
Would those receivers still have the stripper clip thumb cutout?

Commercial FN receivers don't, but FN did sell some military rifles that presumably do. FN from my recollection did sell some to South and Central America during the 1950's and perhaps some Caribbean nations.

There are two receivers in this thread:

The first one is an FN Mauser 98-type that has the stripper clip guide and thumb cut out.

The second is an FN Mauser target action that’s more like a commercial action. It has none of the military features. It also has the solid bolt shroud and a relief cut for a side safety

So which one are you more interested in receiving comments on as requested?

How are you thinking of stocking the target action. Heavy or something lighter. He nice if you can get one inletteted on the top but not the bottom, then just fit the trigger guard.

I see you have no trigger, are you trying to find the sako trigger. A double set would be cool to.

I was thinking the same thing regarding inlets, just a trigger guard on bottom. Stock profile TBD

No idea on the trigger at the moments

You have to check action/magazine length.
A Belgian friend has a nice FN sporter .30-06. It won't accept long spitzers like USGI but is fine with Silvertips below maximum OAL.
There are Mausers with a notch in the receiver ring to clear x63 rounds in a x57 action.
