I've been reading THR for a couple of years now. It has provided me with a source of info that I can never repay. In an attempt to give back to the community, here are my thoughts and comments (and pics) regarding a new FNH SLP Mark 1 shotgun that I picked up a couple of weeks ago. I've had it to the range a couple of times now and have gotten some shooting time in with it.....birdshot, buckshot, and slugs.
The complete review of the SLP Mark 1 can be see on my site.
For those that don't want the long version.....my Cliff Notes version.
This shotgun is fun to shoot! (I believe I read a comment from Mr. McCracken about that being a requirement) It is a little heavier than the Benelli it is trying to replace, but felt recoil and the gas action makes it sweet shooting. I haven't tried it on any clay targets yet but want to. I did dust the one and only hand thrown target a buddy tossed for me so maybe I should stop while I am ahead.
A good friend loaned me his EOTech sight.....and after a half dozen rounds to get it on the target, I squeezed off the next 4 rounds (end of the 2nd box of slugs) to see how well it would do. The four holes in the yellow oval area measure 1.32" (center to center) and account for those shots after the sight adjustments.
The 4 shot group, in the above photo, was the best of the day. Another 5 shot group of the same Federal Vital-Shok Truball 1oz. (1300 FPS) turned in a 1 3/4" group, which is probably more the norm. A 5 shot group shooting the Vital-Shok 1600 FPS 1 oz. slugs turned in a 2 1/4" group, also at 50 yards. Did I mention I prefer those reduced slug loads?
For those that appreciate wood and blued steel, you probably won't like the synthetic furniture and alloy receiver. But it was bought to chew through the shells at the range and the training sessions.....I've no intention of cuddling up next to it.
Anyway, thanks for looking and again, for all of the helpful info I have received from the great folks here.
Best regards, Stu
p.s. Did I mention this this thing is REALLY fun to shoot. Fully, loaded, it will hold 10 rounds. I've managed to hear the last 4 hulls hit the ground after the gun slide locked empty.
