For fans of Monster Hunter International, here's the new cover art

And for anybody who hasn't read it, and clicks on this, wondering how it is gun related, this is about the gunniest book there is.

The artist is Alan Pollack. He's not a gun guy, but is great at fantasy stuff. He wanted to get the guns correct though, so I sent him a bunch of photos of the guns that were in this one specific scene.

The 870 came out pretty darn good. The M14's scale is a touch off, but that's all good considering artistic license.

As a writer, it is pretty darn neat to see a scene from your imagination rendered into a painting. Not at all how I pictured it, but I've got to admit that I'm loving it.

Until somebody gives me millions of dollars for the movie rights, and then he's played by whoever they say he is.

He does kind of look like a really buffed Nathan Fillion in this one though. I'm down with that for the movie, but Mal better start hitting the gym. Hard.

Re: Owen - I was sort of picturing someone with the size and agility of Rulon Gardner.

Gardner is the guy who beat Alexander Karelin for the wrestling gold in the 2000 Olympics. Karelin had been undefeated for 13 years of international competition; didn't give up a point during the last 6 years of the 13 and won 3 Olympic golds in a row.

My only beef is the stock of the 870 doesn't look right. It looks like it turns at a 45 degree angle where he grips it.

Other than that, it is AWESOME!

The pistol grip on the M-14 looks all wrong. It looks as if someone drew a PSG-1 handle too small across her shoulders.

I do like the perspective on the 870, though.

One thing I don't ever do in MHI is actually describe what Owen looks like with any specifics. I do mention that he's big and ugly. He complains about how he is going bald, but I never say just how bad it is. He's got considerable facial scaring at this point of the book. I never mention facial hair at all, but many people assume that he's bearded.

I do mention his size, which is approximately 6'5" 310. So he's a big dude. I don't even really give out his ethenicity directly, but you learn that he's a serbo/polynesian.

Ironically enough, Julie in the painting looks a lot like my wife in real life, which is pretty damn interesting since I based Julie on my wife.

The perspective on the M14 is a bit off, size wise. It is a JAE stock with an ACOG on it. The knife does look big for the scene, but Owen carries a 21" Kukri. Julie's is never specified, so Alan took artistic license. The only people who're going to notice this are people like us, but then again, people like us make up most of my readership.

If you want to get really nit picky, he does have the smiley face patch on his arm, but he actually hadn't earned the right to wear one yet, and doesn't get his patch until the end of the book.

Overall, I'm pumped. When I first sold the rights, I would have been happy if my cover had a amazon chick wearing a chainmail bikini wrestling a mermaid.
