fun targets

For real fun cheap soda cans that you shake up first then shoot with a hollow point. I shot my diet coke can with just a .22 pistol and the thing just exploded with enough force that the nearby cans were knocked over. Can only wonder what my .40 cal would do...

Cabelas also has some cool looking angry critter targets such as blood thirsty wood chucks.

I enjoy chewing up blocks of wood with a .22 pistol too. I remember a few years ago Daddy and I went to the range and it was a really lousy day for a steel plate match which got cancelled... anyway, us and a couple of other guys wound up shooting anything we saw laying around because frankly, who wanted to go out there in the rain setting up targets. So anyhow, I'm over there running nearly 400rds through that Ruger 22/45 in the nastiest weather possible just to see how long it'll run before I have to clean it. And then I noticed a 12guage hull laying out there about 15yds... 1st round was close and the second round sent it flyin'. Next thing I knew, those other guys were setting up 9mm cases on the backboards and trying to hit those with their Glocks.:D

Ice. I fill a plastic container (8 oz round ones seem to work best) 3/4 full, freeze and pop out the ice target, repeat until you have what you think is enough. It wont be, they explode with a very satisfying shower of ice shards. Added bonus... no clean up.

I hate to put this out as my first post as it won't leave the most favorable impression, but when I was much younger/dumber, we would often shoot odd things while up in mountains camping.

I've shot a propane tank that had plenty of propane in it and the only thing we accomplished was putting two holes in the tank.

By far the most fun is taking a 12 gauge and shooting a full, burning, tiki torch (lawn torch). Makes a nice fireball about ten feet in diameter.

I'd like to think that we all have enough common sense to where I don't need to throw in all the disclaimers about forest fires and other potential consequences of such silliness.

Oh, and if you shoot a cow pie on the ground with said 12 gauge, you will get splattered in the face. I'm really glad i'm not young and dumb anymore :)

fun targets are ice blocks. I used to fill a square bucket with water and leave it in the freezer for a couple of days then take it to the range and dad would let me blast it with the 30-06 and then let me plink the bits with a .22lr.

paintball on a golf tee is a brilliant idea! i'll be plinking with those next time out!

i usually just use old cans, misc nuts + bolts from around the shop that have to match.

screw around and shoot the one full one in the pile and you might have yourself a serious medical problem...

Not really. Even a full propane tank isn't a big deal to shoot, I just think it's a waste of propane. It won't explode.

Not to mention, you shouldn't be standing right next to your targets anyway....

OK, everybody line up to congratulate the new guy (gal?) for being the first one gutsy enough to admit having shot cow pies. :D

Welcome to The High Road, honkylips.

The secret is to throw them into the air, of course. It's amazing how fast a kid can get good at choosing the most nearly dry ones, especially when aunts, uncles and cousins are watching and teasing. Everyone's taking turns, naturally.

The dollar store is full of targets, get creative. I try an stay away from plastic crap since its bad form and I dont have the much patience to clean up stuff. I found some of those fuzzy dice take .22lr's pretty well.

Shaving cream is fun, I actually like those little travel cans. Ice can be a lot of fun.

I would like to find a substance that I could mix with water in a 5 gallon water jug that would gel in some fashion so that at 100 yards it would stop a .308 round. I have an old 5 gallon plastic jug that could be sacrificed, but what could be mixed with the water... Please no jello...

Spent shotgun hulls. My old shooting buddy, God rest his soul, and I used to have contests to see who could keep the shotshell bouncing the longest and furthest with .22 LR rifles. That was always the most fun I had shooting, plus it makes you get good in a hurry. For a while there, I'll bet I could have shot the tits off a hopping mother flea at 50 paces with a .22. Prolly not any longer.

An unopened beer, + a 150 gr 7mm seirra boat tail = exciting times

This is against my religion, and I personally find it offensive. :)

On a serious note, I love shooting old electronics; tv's, computers, monitors, even old appliances. Anything with thin sheet metal makes a great sound when hit. For high powered rifles, nothing beats an old can of latex paint. The high density of the paint makes my 150 gr .308 explode like a grenade.

PS... I clean stuff up afterwards.

kbinthescl,

have you shot a computer (the big boxy part)? if you did, did it smoke? dad shot an old computer once and a plume of black smoke poured out. he asked a friend who had shot one, and that guy said it happened to him too....

Do you mean the beer itself, or the act of shooting it? Being that you're from SLC, it could be either. :D

All you pumpkin shooters fail to mention the key to making them really explode...filling them with water. Shooting a plain pumpkin is rather boring... .30 cal hole in, blows a little chunk out the back. But a water-filled pumpkin OTOH, thousands of pumpkin molecules and water everywhere. Even better if you add some food coloring to the water.

Any item that does not contain glass makes a good target. I find no better way to securely dispose of an old hard drive than with my Garand. As for the paint, that would be fun. I saw a video years go of guys shooting 5 gal buckets of white paint with .50 BMGs at 500 and more yards. Its like water jug meets '06 but on a much bigger scale.

Another thing we like to do is have baseball or softball races. Set the balls at 25 yds and the first one to make their ball cross the 75 yd line wins.

I'm a big fan of ginger snaps as outdoor targets. They explode in a lovely way and there's no cleanup afterwards, as tiny creatures fatten themselves after you leave.

For indoors, a lit birthday candle on the edge of the target trap is a spiffy thing-- can you put out the flame without hitting the candle? Big fun.

A.

I have a few. A man I grew up with once found a old case of 'fix-a-flat' in his garage. THAT was a party.

More than once, I have gone to the produce markets on 1 nov to buy up excess pumpkins of all sizes.

Correct. A full propane tank will jet, won't explode. Now, try it with an API round and see what happens. (Ask me how I know you need to be further away than 100 yards when you do this. We only had a few of the rounds and didn't want to risk missing.)

My little brother and I have, on more than one occasion, dropped by the convenience store to see which mirror-finished light beer is on sale, and used them to sight in a 22-250. I know it's alcohol abuse, but my brother saves a few for AFTER shooting. (I've been on the wagon for years.)

I used to save milk jugs to fill with water and shoot, but I don't seem to have space for them anymore.

I should invest in more devices that hold clay birds, they usually shatter spectacularly.

A friend and i used to shoot 2x6x6 boards that i got from work with our muzzleloaders.

His dad went with us once and we explained that we liked to pretend that the boards were indians. His dad was pretty religious and said we had a nimrod attitude and shooting indians was wrong.

He then told us it was O.K. to pretend the boards were tax collectors.
