G20 VS 29SF

I have a 29, 20, and 40. In a Kydex IWB holster, the 29 feels a lot like a 19...but fatter.

On a trade, I wound up with a good leather Rosen holster for my G20. Holy moly, that thing feels like a brick in the pants...IMO.

Edit, I think my 29 currently has one of those tiny Leopold red dots on it. If you are interested to see how big (or small) that is, lemme know and I'll dig it out for some pictures.

I have gen 3 Glock 20SF and 29SF
I prefer the full grip of the 20SF; if I was under a 10 round limit (I'm not) then I'd go 29SF anyway.
A Glock 20 is not too big to carry concealed AIWB in the FL heat under a loose untucked shirt, because I do it. (Holster with claw)

I own a 20SF and purchased a 29SF for carry for two legged vermin… but ended up not carrying as much as I thought.. the 30S and 23 got the call .. so I swapped the 29 for a fantastic Marlin 336 Texan

Last year I purchased most likely the best 10mm for personal defense carry .. the XDME compact.. which is the same size the of the 9mm XDME Compact…

Having just recently acquired a G29.4 to go with my G20.4, I can say this:

I like the small size of the G29 when it comes to carry. But it comes with significant compromises.

Assuming you're familiar with other Glock models, which would you rather shoot, and which would you rather carry, a G17 or a G26? That really is very close to the comparison. The G29 is actually between the G19 and G26 in size, but there's no illusion about the grip space, if you want the pinky on something you will need to add that to the magazine because it's not on the frame.

Velocity reduction based on my loads is somewhere around 55fps going from the G20 to the G29 with a 180gr bullet. Is that enough to matter to you? A reduction in velocity does mean a reduction in recoil, which on a smaller lighter gun, I feel balances out pretty well. Though that is subjective, I suppose a person could run the number through a recoil impulse calculator.

Weight between the two is something I have not checked. But just by feel there is an obvious difference, though I suspect 5 additional rounds of 10mm probably make up about the same difference as the weight between one gun and another without magazines.

The primary reason I have this new G29 is not because I can't conceal the G20 through the summer using, an appropriate holster with reasonable forward cant, and an appropriate cover garment. I bought it because sometimes I just don't want to try that hard, and I don't want to carry that much weight. Sometimes I'm willing to take a reduced sight radius, smaller grip, lower capacity, and reduced velocity, in exchange for convenience and comfort. A hot summer day is certainly one of those times. Higher altitude hikes would be another.

A worthwhile consideration is that you can get a longer barrel for the G29* and magazine extensions, which will bring it closer to the size of the G20. You cannot make the G20 any smaller without chopping it.

*KKM will cut a custom length barrel at no extra charge, up to a certain length. For the G29 I am fairly sure they will go to at least 4.25", if not 4.5"

I started with a G20. Liked it, but wanted something more compact and bought a G29. Not he SF version. There was no difference in accuracy with me pulling the trigger and larger 15 round mags will fit the smaller gun making it more versatile. I sold the G20.

And to be perfectly fair after I tried the Smith M&P compact in 10mm I sold the G29. The compact Smith split the difference in size between the G20 and G29, it has a better trigger and I shoot it more accurately than either Glock. The ability to get the Smith with a 1911 style manual safety was the deciding factor. For what I use it for I like having a safety on it.

Also note, in Glock-speak, the G29 is a Sub-Compact.

Yes, but you get the idea.
Regardless of all the "it's basically the same size as the G19 which is a Compact", for whatever reason Glock never saw fit to produce a "Compact" in either .45 Auto or 10mm.

Id be very satisfied with a G43X/48 IN 10MM.

I'm not sure that frame size would be strong enough. Even if they could make that aspect work, I think the reduced slide mass would cause a large increase in slide velocity. That would be even more stress for the frame.

Best case might be a single stack version of the G19 width frame. That's a big guess on my part though.

Both would be awesome.....hmmmm G20 mos for me and 29 for wife(for me as well)...lol Now a 29 mos(if it was made) with extra longer barrel would be a big win.

Hard to beat a G29 for concealed EDC over the G20. The G20 makes a great outdoor/"trail" gun (if you don't already own the long-slide G40 for that role).

I don't own a 29, or a G20SF, but I do own and carry a G20 gen 4 every day of the year.
I carry it IWB 3:00 position. Prior to it, I carried a G19.
Yes the Glock 20 is large, but I have no problem carrying it concealed and very much prefer shooting it to smaller framed handguns.

Of my 10 or so Glock, I like the 29 the least of all. I got into 10mm 20 years ago and bought most every model made up until the p220 kryptek hunter. That was the last one I bought.

To me the 29 is so big that there is no use giving up the extra sight radius of the 20. I felt the same about the 19 and 23. It own 17 and 22 and 26 and 27 so the 19 and 23 I never bought. Ive shot plenty. I used my 29 for ccw for a short while many years ago but it's been in its case for the last 15 or so years where it will likely stay.

You want the Glock 29.

You will get barely 50 fps or so less, and the carryability is tremendously easier.

Hard to argue with Physics. Obviously, the OP is worried about size for carry. Some carry the 20 and others the HK Mark23, or the Desert Eagle, but in light of the original question, the 29 seems to be the answer that fits the bill.
