Doggone it Bullseye! Now I want one, and you haven't even fired it yet!

OK OK OK ! I shot it out my back window twice. LOL
I hit a tree and some snow. It's cold out there.
I couldn't see it flying like my old Red Ryder so that's a good thing. :D
We'll have to wait for a time when I can get serious.
I'll post my target.
.... and a kill!

It's okay Bullseye, what LoonWulf is trying to tell you is that he (and I) is (are) waiting PATIENTLY for you to post the following: five shot group from ten and twenty yards, load information, trophy shot of verminous squirrel, chronograph information (at range if possible), trophy shot of attracted coyote, shot of whatever recipe you use (if applicable), a picture of your splendid refinished stock, etc.

Oh, and if we could wait patiently for less than about five minutes, it would be great

Don't worry, I'm joking, if you couldn't tell...

I may make a box target for down in my basement. It's a long ways from one end to the other. I suppose I'd better put sufficient padding in the box. Maybe fold up a beat up moving blanket from Harbor Freight.
Yes, this is what I'll do.
Then when I get a couple squirrels, I'll bake a pie.

I actually got my targets in out of the car, found a box and moving blanket, and took them into the basement.
I can't say this is a pretty gun. It's OK. I will make it as pretty as can be tho.
Tomorrow will work. No squirrels in my basement tho.

Okay! Looking forward to it with bated breath!

I knew an old preacher who shot in his basement and used books as his backstop. Old telephone books, books from his library that he didn't like what the author said, etc.

Just an idea for a backstop you might not have thought of. Useful end for those no longer valid CheaperThanDirt catalogs, Cabelas, etc...

Here's my report

Notice this thread has nothing to do with a Gamo Whisper anymore. Maybe I can ask the mods to change the title.

I could shoot two targets downstairs. 5 YDS and 12 YDS
Here's the gun. I have it cleaned up good enough. There was some kind of flat black paint on it from the refurb which I guess I have gotten most off.

So I was pretty excited with the 5 shot group at 5 yds. Exactly 2 inches low.

View attachment 229667

I was sitting in a Harbor freight chair with a towel over a folding chair for this which worked better for a bench than my set up for 12 yds.
I can see a lot better at 5 yds too.

Then I started to adjust the up and down knob. Went the wrong way of course, for the first shot.
Point of aim is the black circle to the left.
Got back to where I was on shot 2 & 3
Got higher adjusting further on shot 4.
Then went to the center bullseye on shots 5 & 6

View attachment 229669

I wasn't quite as serious on these 6 shots. I just wanted to move up a couple inches.
Shot 6 was raised with the rear sight but it seems that's as far as it will go. The sight is not the greatest for quality.
It is a Daisy 5899 precision receiver peep sight. It comes new in a box with the refurb 853.

Thinking I might get a bit of a rise in trajectory at 12 yds, I moved back but set up my bench the opposite way.
I think it hurt my shooting.

The first shot hit the bullseye!
Then the next 4 shots went south but still pretty much on center.
I think I would have done better if I set up with the folding chair in front of me again.
Here I am close to my burning wood stove too. I felt as tho I was "under fire" shooting the 12 yd target.
The pellets used were the gamo red tipped ones.

and no .... I am not boiling a sqirrel in the pot on the stove. They seem to be hip to my 853.
I am not quite ready for headshots. I need to sight in just a little better yet.

Woo hoo! It lives!

Yeah, the gun will do better than your twelve yard groups. Don't worry. Five yard group looked beautiful!

Bring on the trophy shots!

Just FYI, I've never had ANY luck with ANY GAMO pellets in ANY gun at ANY distance that I have ever tried. I have tried in multiple break barrel springers, and one multi pump. Just a thought, try several different pellets.

From what I have been reading, I BOUGHT
Umarex Meisterkugeln Pellets, .177, Competition 8.2g /500
and may buy
JSB Diabolo EXACT .177 Caliber Air Gun Pellets

I get excellent results with the Whisper, a cheap but stable red-dot, and RWS Meister 8.2's as posted above. Inside 30 yds the thing rules the bushy-tailed enemy. At some point I will do a page of chrono data on a selection of the pellets I've tried. Still too crappy out there.

My buddy told me to "just keep it" when I told him I wanted to get the Gamo back to him a bout a week ago. Not that I would just "keep it" but clearly he wants to be rid of it.
When these other Meisterkugeln pellets come in, I'll see if they do any better in the Gamo Whisper.

Both of those pictured pellets should do you good.

Try out Crosman premier ammo too. Cheaper than the others, and my .22 likes them better than RWS superdomes.

I just went and shot my springers at 35 yards. I experimented with different holds and rests. Best group was off a cutoff from a beam or something (12x12 or something like that) with a rag folded up directly under the screws in the forearm, prone. I couldn't hold steady enough either with my hand or the rag directly in front of the trigger guard. Stay loose, and more importantly, stay patient. Don't do this when you are short on time!

One more thing about the Whisper, are the screws in the forearm that hold the stock to the barrel/spring tube loose and floppy? They should both be snug.

Have fun! Don't forget a kill shot with your Daisy!

Nice! Looking forward to how that gun does on squirles. I think youll do well with the wadcutters, and the jsb for that mater(they are what i shoot) I also second trying the crosman premiers, add a drop of oil to the tin and shake lightly to coat, they are pretty hard and that seems to help with lower power guns.

Good luck with the gamo as well, it should be fun atleast.

Bought these too!
Will check out those screws in the forearm of the Whisper.

Ive never used that particular pointed premier....looks way different than the tub i have on the shelf. Im interested to know how they work, i had nothing but poor luck wiht the ones ive got.....thats why they are still here and none of the guns that shoot them are, hows that for a change LOL.

I use the hollow points habitually, but the same weight, and the can looks just like that one. Some airguns are very picky about weight as well, so try some ultra heavy ones too. Have fun!

Were those Daisy 853s ever made in .22? What is the advertised velocity? I'm having trouble finding specs on it because nobody seems to carry them anymore! Fancy that, nobody carries them because they aren't made anymore! Are they single shot or do they take some sort of preloaded clip? I've seen something like that before. The picture you posted almost looked like it could take a clip of some sort.

Besides field target air rifles, i dont believe many, if any, "match" style airguns were available in .22.

The 853 I believe shares the same basic reciever shape as a couple of daisys that CAN take clips, but i dont belive it can. A little research shows that the 853C does take clips, i didnt know that lol

I know very little about the Daisy or Avanti or Powerline 853
I think a .22 would be at least a different model altogether.
I did see a video a ways back but can't remember if it was a Canadian model that had a magazine.
Here's where and how I got it. Scroll down about 2/3 the page. Most recommended the Monte Carlo stock.
Took maybe a week or 9 days to get here including weekend.
There's specs out there. You just got to poke around. http://www.airguns.net/reviews_daisy853.php

The velocities are supposed to be short of 500 fps. I would imagine that would be for what weight pellet is used?
The velocities are supposed to be very consistent from shot to shot. Those velocities shown in the "specs" link are a lot slower than another place I had found. Then I found one that is closer to 450 fps.

If you look around in this blog. You can see there are 4 parts. This is part 4

I asked to have this title of this thread changed but it was suggested that I start a new thread.
Since there's only a few of us involved in this one. I guess I'll just leave it alone.
It would have better been named as Gamo Whisper vs The Daisy 853 maybe but I had no idea I would end up with both in my man cave as I type this.

So much for the before pictures. I got started on it and forgot I wanted to take some.
Theres no cracks in the wood. It was gouged a bit from use. Permanent marker numbers and such.
This is as far as I got. Some sanding and Minwax stain and some Formby's so far.
What shade is that, if I may ask? Looks very nice!

It's dark walnut and a bit of a furniture scratch touch up permanent felt tip marker rubbed into the sanded areas before it quickly dries. It looks somewhat better with obvious use than it did anyway.
I'm one for rubbing things into wood. I'll probably mess with it a number of times when I get the urge and time.
I saw another guy who completely refinished 3 of these birch stocks and they came out an awesome blond color.
I don't think this is that important of a pellet gun to go to that extent.
Here's his guns. WOW
