Gander Mountain prices

I don't think anyone is giving away free guns. Gander Mtn. has some good deals and some good sales from time to time, just like any retailer. To single them out is inaccurate at best. I like them because they carry a wide range of guns and a large selection of accessories. That comes at a cost. I've found some very good deals at my local G.M.

I'm turned off by Gander Mountain because -- at least in the case of the one here == they've started posting against CCW. They've always had a sign about "checking in" firearms brought in the store for gunsmith service; the sign used to make clear that it didn't cover CCW. Now they've changed it so that CCW is clearly prohibited.

If they don't trust CCW holders, why should they buy from them?

I stopped in the GM store in Saginaw last week to see if they would match Dick's Ammo sales. Dick's coupon was for 1/2 off second box of "all ammo" salesman said they couldn't do it because the GM scanner couldn't read the coupon, I said whats to read the dam thing says half off 2nd all ammo then turned around and left. Went to Dicks and bought some ammo, funny thing is they didn't even try to scan the coupon just gave me the discount and threw the coupon into the trash. I thought that GM would meet any competitors price if they were within 50 miles. About the only thing I ever buy at a GM store is whats on closeout.

GM used to have good deals. Some years back, I picked up two NIB CZ 40Bs for $250 apiece, and then a CZ 40P for the same price. All three were on sale at the time. I consider those the best deals I've ever encountered on new firearms.

Then I noticed their prices started to float upwards considerably, and I stopped going there altogether. Last week, though, a friend wanted me to accompany him to go buy his first ever handgun (he wanted a 40S&W Walther P99 AS, after having shot mine), and one of the places we stopped at was the local GM.

They wanted $750 for a NIB P99. The prices of their other firearms were equally ludicrous. Needless to say, we walked out of the store in a jiffy.

What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week - which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

The folks who set Gun Prices at GM aren't Gun Guys. A friend who worked the counter at a local Gunshop for years recently took the job managing the Gun Counter at our new, mega-store GM. He commented (lamented) that the "corporate office" decision-makers & price-setters weren't very attuned to the gun buyer or the gun market. But experienced, savvy gun-buyers aren't their primary market. They're selling to Mall-Shoppers...not Gun Shop Regulars like most of us.

I bought a P1 from them last year. I thought the price was fair. Came with holster and 2 mags.

Have also bought some ammo there. No bargains, but not outrageously higher than other stores in the area.

I think they have a pricing structure that is based on selling at the highest price the market will bear. I don't have a problem with that. If enough people shop elsewhere, their prices will drop.

My understanding is they will meet the price a competitor's price on new guns.

I got a good price on an M&P from GM but just bought a DPMS for $839 and then stopped at the new GM in Richmond and saw the exact same AR for $1059 so it still goes the the buyer to beware.

A buddy of mine bought a KT PF9 last weekend. His compared prices and found the following:

DeGoffs $289
Green Top $329
Gander Mountain $369

Apparently, GM thinks that Central Virginians are really, really stupid. Really.

There are a lot of retail stores that are not real competitive on their prices. There is a gas station down the road from where I work. They are normally 10 cents higher then the station down the street. I just don't buy gas there as i can get it down the street for ten cents a gallon less (plus for 3 months I get a 15% rebate if I use their CC).

My wife goes to Michaels (craft store). Their prices are insane. You can buy most of what they have at WalMart for 25-50% less. They sell regular Sharpie pens for 3X what a normal office supply or WalMart store charges. She mostly buys stuff there that is not readily available elsewhere or when she has a good coupon.

Used RIA 45 $399
New Kel-Tec P11 $339-349 (paid $279 in January 07 at the same store.)

I have seen some good deals on the used stuff but the new prices are pretty crazy. I bought a pound of AA #7 and the sticker on it said $21.95 it rang up at $27-28. I showed the price tag and they adjusted the price for me. That was about a month ago I pretty sure the new price is on all of the powder now.

It's a mixed bag. I went in today looking for .38 spl. bullets for reloading for target practice. They didn't have any. :uhoh: Had Speer Gold Dots (nice to know when I'm wanting to reload SD ammo, but that wasn't what I was there for). They didn't have a primer attachment for my reloader either. So I had them order one.... almost two weeks and still waiting.....

OTOH, when I bought my first handgun, they were brand new in the area, and they had the best price by about $40 on it, so they got my business. When I wanted a snubbie, they were the ones that had a few of those m37's that were made a couple of years ago without the internal lock...and I got one. Nobody else around had them. They had the best price by almost $100 for my Kimber Ultra Carry II when I bought it. They're outrageous on Henry Big Boys, so we bought one online for Archerandshooter...and my Bersa Ultra Compact came from Academy, who was much cheaper than either Carter's Country or GM.

So it's hit or miss. If they weren't meeting a need they wouldn't stay in business. Also, they're like Bass Pro (another favorite complaint target) in that they are not a firearms store...they are a sporting goods store. While you and I may ignore everything else and head straight for the handguns or ammo, there are enough other people who buy the other stuff they sell (and on which they generally do have good prices) that they do fine.

Buy stuff when it's on sale there, or when they have something unique, and they're quite good. Shop around, go where the prices are.

I check in at gander mountain fairly often. In my area the prices are pretty high no matter where you go. The gander prices can be particularly so, but every so often I find something there in the used case thats an unusually good deal. Sometimes I wonder if it's becasue they lack the knowledge to know exactly what they have. For example, sometimes guns which might command a premium for whatever reason in the general market will get priced like a 'basic' version of that gun in the bluebook. K frame smiths are a good example. Prices on them seem to be going up in the popular market for whatever reasons, and yet I got a near perfect 66 not long ago at gander for $299. Another example in my collection from the past year is a chromed baby eagle I bought there that was a factory demo direct from magnum research. Gander had it marked according to the blue book value of a current common blued (or maybe even poly) model. I got that one in 99% condition for $349 I think. The point is, yes they are typically expensive, but it's certainly worth looking sometimes.. even if its because they make mistakes.

Also as a personal factor.. Gander Mountain is about 3.5 to 4 miles from me. The "good shops" are at least 30 mins to an hour away (not sure of mileage). When you drive a full size pickup truck as I do, the difference in gas use and mileage can be a major factor in considering pricing as well.
