I made a Minor 25 minute road trip to my Local Gander Mountain Store $150 to $300 over msrp on Most guns. They had a big selection from different manufacturers but reely.Cheapest they had were a ton of beat up sick looking 9mm's made by Lucznik[PolishMade] ,boxes of them, Ammo was over the top and The Morons were lined up to buy tthe boxes they were limited too..a whole bunch of Gun Toten wannabes were in the Crowd ,a whole lotta muzzle flashin too.a guy standing next too me tried to grab a Taurus out of my hand and I shoved his hand back and handed to the Salesman I was talking too, then he look at the other sales man and asked him to look at the "DIRTY HARRY" gun in the next case ...That'll be my last excurscion too gander mountain...wow..I bet my Public range will be a Hoot when the weather warms up..these same people gonna be out there shootin at everything...

Airbrush, don't be too hasty to miss a chance to teach someone a little gun store courtesy. Those newbies are all voters too, and we could use some more on our side.

Yea Great Point Opt .I was fast on the Judgement trigger but man, some of them are Dangerous about the simple things ..I'm hopin after this craziness is over there will be a whole bunch of great guns to get at tremendous prices.I worked at a Music store in the guitar dept for a while and never failed every Christmas People Flocked in spending $1,000's on Fenders,Gibsons,Top named Instruments and was back in the middle of Febuary wanting to sell them back to us.we bought them too and Half what they paid...lets hope that happens...

What you saw is certainly not rare though.
I was looking at a P64 used at the Gander counter and debating whether my daughter would like the recoil or not, and Tommy Toughskins came walking by and said "what's that?" I told him and he said "the card says 9mm, you gotta scoop that up! Get all the 9mm guns you can! And there's some ammo right here" pointing of course to the 9mm parabellum stack of overpriced ammo.
I gave him a quizzed look and said "9mm like you're thinking about is different than 9mm Makarov; you know that right?"
I taught someone something. Yay for me.

Gotta get all the 9mm guns you can? Why is that? Very weird logic. I mean. I like 9mm guns but...did they just become AR15/M1A level gotta have guns? People are getting silly.

I stopped buying from gander mountain the first time I walked into another gun shop. Their prices have always been terrible. The ammo is usually twice as much as any other store, the guns are new msrp even on the used ones. They suck, that's it. They were price gouging before it was cool! I can't believe they are still in business? It's been 8 years or more since I even walked into one of their stores. They were selling 100 cci 400 primers for $16, nuff said.

I dont jump into the bashing fest on newbies but...........

I am certainly glad that I have a membership at a private club. After the first Obamanation scare I went to a public range with a friend once(he invited me). It was absolutely terrifying. People sweeping people with loaded guns, I counted THREE negligent discharges in a two hour period. Thankfully only one of them wasnt pointed downrange, it was pointed straight at the ground and guy missed his foot by a matter of inches. There were people with the wrong ammo for the guns they had, people that were just shooting at the berm with no targets out because they had no idea you needed to buy targets.

I havent been back to a public range since then, except for bullseye competition, and the range is closed to the public during that.

I checked out Gander Mountain for the first time back in October. The prices were over the top on all but a few things that were on sale, and their ammunition was especially high.I was shocked to find 45 acp 230gn Golden Saber was $54.99 for a box of 25 rounds. I went home and ordered a few boxes from Natchez for $16.99 a box at the time. If their ammunition has gone up due to the current panic then I don't even want to know how much it is.

Come on Buck..you are making an assumption. LOL

maybe......but IMHO, going to Gander Mountain, on the weekend, during the biggest Gun/Ammo/Accessories buying frenzy our country has ever seen, is no different than going to Wal-Mart or the Mall on Black Friday. If one does not have a positive experience, who's to blame?

Let me break it down for you. I worked at GM for 2yrs part time to get the discounts offered to its employees. Believe me it was not for the pay. They are offered incredible discounts on guns and other items because most that work there cannot afford that stuff on their tiny paychecks GM gives them. Now you have a chain of stores who hire the cheapest employees possible to fill the need. KNOWLEDGE does not matter there. So anyone who goes to a GM and thinks they are getting the best information by its employees is a "low information" buyer. The ones who continue to return to the store over and over for the questionable service and unusually high prices deserve what they get. Most of the guys hanging around the gun counter at a GM know justa little more than the employee which is not much. Do yourself a favor and skip GM and go to a REAL gun store where the employees are knowledgable and actually can carry and use their guns.

The local Gander Mtn closed down last year. It's kind of a shame since they had pretty good customer service. That's probably because there were more employees than customers in the story on most days.
Their prices were too high and they had too much competition in the area. It's that simple. Bass Pro Shops was right up the road and they had a larger, better stocked and cooler store. Greentop was within walking distance of GM and they had better gun prices. Gander Mtn just didn't do anything that well and their handgun selection was mediocre and over priced.

Gander Mountain is what it is. Mine looks like a giant box-store. Prices are high for me anyway.

At least you can "handle" the weapons. Used, set in front of counter.

Bass Pro has a different "feel" to it. Plus,it looks like a sports store. J s/n.

I went there a few years ago to buy some .45 ammo. The shelf was full and the .45 ammo they had was some black hills for $50 a box. There were no other UPC tags or SKUs to indicate that they even carried any cheaper or different brand of .45 ammo.

Everywhere that sells guns & ammo is ridiculous right now. Gander is big, so they will be proportionally more ridiculous. Things will calm down in a few months when supplies start to catch up and the newbies run out of energy/money.

We wanted millions of new gun owners. This is what it looks like.

A few years back, I won about $1000.00 worth of Gander Mountain merchandise at a Gun Raffle.
I invited my Wife, Sister-in -Law and Brother-in Law to a store to help me spend my good fortune.
The ladies of course hit the clothes, and the guys hit the fishing tackle/ gun stuff.
Reloading supply prices were not good as were the prices of ammo and guns themselves.
The Gals weren't really impressed with the clothing prices either.
HOWEVER, we spent my "prize" plus.
Not REALLY anxious to go back to Gander Mountain

The only time I go to a large retailer is when my local shop is out of something that I NEED ASAP (and that's rare). But I stay away from Bass Pro and GM. Until they have big sales. My local shop from day one when they didn't know me, has always taken care of me. Their prices 99% of the time are better than the big retailers. And if I have a question, I know I'm going to get the right answer. And it's a 30 mile drive to my local shop. But you just can't beat them.

I went to GM once. Walked in, saw the prices, saw a guy looking at a gun, pulled the gun up on BGS website. He thanked me and we both walked out happy.

Saw a S&W 5906 stainless 9mm for $399.

Now that ain't a super deal but not bad as the 5906 was one sturdy (but heavy) 9mm.

Most Gander guns are, yes, overpriced and so is the ammo but they have a huge breath and depth of products.

Sometimes, rarely but sometimes, you can get a good deal there.

I bought a Italian Beretta 1934 .380, made in 1941 (yes a Italian Army pistol) for $250. Yep still have it and it shoots great. Now were can you get a WWII collectors item for that kind of price?

Deaf

Pretty good price for a 5906, a classic 9mm duty pistol ... and 250 for the 1934, if it's in good shape is okay, too. 'Course, we don't have this Gander Mountain up here in the PacNorthWest ... (but we got Cabela's)...

I stopped in tonight and they had lots of .30-30 for $16.99 a box, so not a horrible trip.

Having handled the very rare, Australian (AIA) imitation "Jungle Carbine" in 7.62x39 inside a GM, I never forgot the gun or the price:scrutiny:,
though the situation was a very rare fluke.

It was early '09, in the Gander opposite the Sheraton Hotel by Fashion Square Mall in Saginaw, MI.

This is no endorsement of their ludicrous prices, but the big box stores never carried such a rare "Jungle" imitation, nor the Mosin Nagant 44s or 91/30s.

High prices and lack of service are 2 of the reasons that the GM closed in my area. Parking lot was always empty except at Christmas when wives went in and paid the prices because they did not know any better.

what worries me more

I am apprehensive that many of the characters mentioned in some of the posts are going to show up at your shooting range this Spring.. Mmmmm scary eh?
Well I will continue to shoot at my regular club range till it warms up and as soon as the Wannabe shooters appear, I am off to a friends private range.
Had too many hairy experiences last year, including having a rifle pointed at the wife and I as someone was taking photos of their new rifle! I dont need that,
Dont get me wrong, If I see a new shooter that appears to want and need assistance, it is freely offered, Unfortunately, many of the newer ones I see, figure this is a piece of cake and WOW we have holes in the roof of the shelters. mmm not somewhere I want to be!

Their prices were unreal even before all of this nonsense. I only go in there to look at their used guns.
