I just got this in an email as I am a student at TTU. Considering I was just there today, I'm glad I was carrying at the time.

TTU and Cookeville Police have been made aware of a text message circulating about rumors of a gang initiation at Wal-Mart. TTU Police officials have spoken with the city police department and have been informed that a detective is assigned to the investigation. They have also added an extra watch to the area. TTU Police Chief Gay Shepherd has spoken with the Director of Security at Wal-Mart, who has been in contact with Cookeville Police. TTU officers have also been briefed on the message. At this time, the information has not been validated or refuted.

Has anyone reading this who lives in a smaller city noticed an increase in gang activity lately, and if so what are you doing about it?

This text was circulated around the Shreveport, LA area within the last week. It has happened around the country from time to time in the last couple of years. So far nothing has come of it.

I can only imagine the initiation.

"Yo, yo; Caprice Deuce be needin' some Renuzit, yo. Aisle Six, an' at the deek. Azzo-she-ate Re-gansta fail, cap-yo-azz, yo."

The gangs of my day never went to public places for initiations. THey'd go do it behind the bleachers or some other nook and cranny away from prying eyes. This is just some cyber nerd and copycats, with nothing better to do than send hoaxes like these.

Reminds me of the fax alerts of the early 1990s about gang initiations involving driving around with lights off and being "required" to shoot up the first car that flashes its headlights at them.

For all I know, they are research projects into the spread and mutation of urban myths.

Just a week or two ago, I got another of the really old e-mails about Microsoft and some "beta" test of e-mail claiming forward this to so-and-so many you know and they'll pay you $XX per...

I just try to stay alert and watch my six.

whether this "gang text" or w/e is real or not, gang activity is definitely spreading from large metro areas to smaller towns. it is my guess that gangbangers find that the police in smaller towns are ill prepared for their types of crime. i now live in the small town of bellingham WA. Washington is a 2nd amendment friendly state, but it is known state wide that Bellingham residents are not gun friendly for the most part.

so in the eyes of a criminal, bellingham is a decent sized upper class town that for the most part is not armed... so, rich folks+no guns= more and more gangbangers in my town preying on a largely unarmed community.

luckily everyone in my house is strapped and is intelligent enough to use their arms in the right.

I guy was shot in the head while in a WalMart parking lot In Rogersville, TN (about 10 miles fro me)...he was sniped while standing there talking. It was gang related even though the news story didn't say so (I'm buddies with the LEO's and my ex-wife was the paramedic that responded to the scene)

The town I live in has a population of less than 1,300 people (actually I live several miles from town...but that's my zipcode anyway)

Rogersville is quite a bit bigger (maybe 15,000 or so) and gang activity is spilling over into it from Knoxville, TN which is only 74 miles down the road...even MS13, but they were not involved.

My son (16 years old and not a part of any gangs) recently had a run in at school with a couple of members of the "bloods"...after the altercation at school, those 2 [ ] made the mistake of coming here....yes, to my house.

They called him and said they were coming to "beat him down" (they got the # from one of his stupid friends...no longer a friend BTW)...now, my son could probably have dealt with them himself (he gave as good as he got in the fight at school...I taught him well), but I intended to make my point clear....crystal clear.

When they started beating on my front door....I kindly opened the door and front kicked the little punk over the rail and off my 8 foot high porch. (his buddy didn't care to participate)

As he lay there with the breath knocked of him I told him what would happen if I ever saw him here again.

Yes...he was a minor, but I don't care if somebody is 8, 18 or 80, blind, crippled, or crazy....they don't come to my house threatening anybody.

They won't even look his way at school now...none of them.

EDIT: Here is a link to the WalMart shooting... http://www.timesnews.net/article.php?id=9010257 they did catch him a few days later.

Gang activity has been spreading to the smaller towns for at least 20 years. Where do you think the drugs that are sold come from? Gangs have been moving into small towns because they want to make money from supplying the drugs there. It's plain and simple economics. There is a market there for the product they sell.

If there is crack cocaine or heroin in your small town you have members affiliated with an inner city street gang, bloods, crips, Latin kings, gangster disciples.....if you have meth and it's not home brewed you have outlaw motorcycle gangs like the Outlaws or Hells Angels or Mexican gangs supplying it. It may not be the exact gang I named, but will be a gang affiliated with one of them.

This is very old news. Where were you guys 20 years ago with this information?

What can you do to combat it? Stay away from them. The old adage about not living a criminal lifestyle or hanging out with those who do will keep you safe. For the most part they don't prey on anyone but each other. All of the initiation emails and texts flying around are nothing more then urban legend.

I had a briefing on this tonight at work, and I'm not in a small town.

I'll check the news when I wake up in the morning, as I forgot to ask the local cop I dealt with tonight if this actually went off. The local agency let my agency know about this, but I'm not "local".

In addition, smaller towns have less of a police force, and less budgets. So if the gangs lay low, and do not attract a bunch of attention, operations can do things out of a small town.

Sad...some old folks with limited income, and having a hard time, have been known to lend that "old lady gray buick" or "while in town drop off a package".

Some of these gangs are not totally stupid, and run around in droopy britches.
Some serious, well organized, groomed, and business like folks run dope and other illegal substances as well.

It might be the well respected Furniture Store owner in a smaller town.
Err... one reason this fella has not been busted ( not to my knowledge anyway) is the political machine.
I mean even the local DA was busted and sent to prison for being involved and "distracting" the efforts of the Task Force.

Furniture is delivered, and some "youths" take jobs driving these trucks.
This ain't rocket science.
Maybe the sign should read: buy a kilo and get a free dresser.

All this is not new.

I mean there was a lot of "furniture polish" being sold by youths back in Prohibition days...

small towns in the rural south seem to be having some problems with young kids setting up copycat versions of the Crips and Bloods. These mini-yahoos actually think they are real Crips! Talking to these pint-sized wannabes is an exercise in futility. I had to deal with a lot of this stuff working for a state child welfare agency for a few years.

gangs active in bellingham to an extent are.........

Bonsallo Loco Surenos 13
Brown Pride Surenos 13
Hilltop Crips
Hoover Criminals, 74
"Juggalos"
La Raza Playboys 13
Rollin' 60's Crips (Lummi Reservation)
Tin Banh
Tiny Raskal Gang
South Side Whittier Tokers 13
West Side Piru (Bloods)

Story from back home (Selma, AL) as repeated to me by my mom last night, was that two men, two women and two cops were to be kidnapped in said initiation. She had happened to be in town yesterday afternoon and said there was a black and white (city PD patrol car) at each of the front corners of the WM building.

Strange how these stories get around...

ETA: If you get anything in email that ends with "Forward this to everyone you know..."- DON'T! If there is any infallible sign of an internet hoax, that's it.

Once upon a time...
I used to visit Juvenile Detention Centers. The who what when and why of me doing this is not important.

There was a young man that had been in a gang since he was young. Real deal, serious gang, and he was most fascinating. He and I hit it off and got along.
I was not a cop, not part of the system, and ...

Some serious had gone down and he had chosen to ...let us say this was akin to a witness protection deal. Meaning, he was going to get a chance to have a life, a legit one, in return for righting some wrongs.

He gave some talks, one in particular to employees of the JDC, invited folks, and families.
Un edited, raw, telling it like it is.
I mean he got into the face of teenage kids and in no uncertain terms explained to teenage girl what her initiation was going to be if she chose to be in a gang.
Her mom freaked, and this youth basically told her to shut up and pay attention to reality as he continued.
A teenage boy, had an attitude during this part of his talk and when finished about girl stuff, totally come down hard and fast on that wannabe teenage boy.

Teenage boy had to excuse himself, as he peed himself.
All the youth did was use his hands to replicate a gun and again, in no uncertain terms ( language) replicated a deal one his gang did to a wanna be punk one time, with a honest to goodness "nine" as they had robbed a Nat'l Guard Armory.

He also spoke of Gun Control.
"We like gun control areas, easy prey, we have enough sense to not go to pro gun places, because folks will shoot your arse".
That is the gist of what he said, edited of course.

There was another talk along this same line to some youths inside.
I was allowed to be a part of this talk as well.

Some youths, were at a point in life, they could go either way.
I kid you not, some of the folks that thought they were bad, or would be career criminals got a serious dose of reality.

Some of these bad boys and girls were looking my way. I was not a cop, not part of the facility, not a lawyer...still some looked at me with the wrong look.
Like maybe I might be a good target.

Youth speaking was watching for this, as I said we had an understanding , and earned respect if you will.

He made it real clear I was cool, and he said he still had eyes and ears on the streets, and if anything happened to me, there would be hell to pay.

I was in a small town, near this JDC, about a month later, and it was about 10pm when I arrived and stopped to buy gas.
A car pulls in with some youths and look my way.
I am being sized up...
"Dude is cool and off limits" I hear from a youth.
This was a brother of one in the JDC. (don't ask, just I know).

Youths would come down to smaller towns, thinking it would be easier pickings.
That night I said in a nice even tone "gentleman, the State and County boys down this way, are not going to put up with anything. In fact, they do have practiced plans".
That car went back up to the bigger city.

Seriously this small town had some plans. More than once some youths were rounded up, and escorted back to the county line.
"You get one free pass, then its hell to pay down here".

It was not the WalMart, instead the bowling alley where bowling leagues played and these youths were checking out the cars and the folks inside where on one occaison a number of units, from city, county and state rolled in fast and hard and there was a convoy back to the county line.

Another time, the little league ball field.
Funny how all the exits were blocked and the youths could not evade when these roundups occurred.

You do not want to be a wanna be gangbanger , and find yourself face to face with the real deal.

Reality is Real.

20 years ago I was learning about drug interdiction when doggies sniff 5th wheel at the border checkpoints, a mere year or two out of a dumbed down school course that were nothing but videos telling one to "Say No to drugs."

Gangs were simple in those days. Either Bloods, Crips or Vice Lords.

Now things like MS13 and others are moving our way. It's all good.

If they open that Islamic Mosque and start wailing from a tower in town at 5 am to prayer, we are aout of here.

Police Probe Alarming Text Message Hoax
WASHINGTON TWP., N.J. (CBS 3) ―

Delaware State Police are investigating a hoax text message about violent gang attacks at Wal-Mart stores in Delaware and Maryland.

Investigators said they have been inundated with telephone calls regarding a text message that has been circulating throughout Central and Southern Delaware and portions of Maryland.

The text message reportedly read: "i don't noe how tru dis is but here it is. Dont go 2 any walmarts 2nite ther will be a gang initiation n dey have 2 kill 3 women at each store. Tell ur love 1s.

The message warns of an alleged gang initiation in which women will be killed at Wal-Mart. The message also warns women not to go to Wal-Mart. The text messages did not threaten any specific Wal-Mart stores.

Investigators have found no credible information deeming the message as a real threat and "open source information reveals this as an urban myth."

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Kelly Cheeseman released a statement that read in part:

"The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority. We are aware of the message being circulated and are working with local authorities to enhance our security efforts at our stores in the area. While we take these types of situations seriously, we regard this as being only a rumor, much like similar rumors that have circulated via e-mail in previous years."

The alarming text messages remain under investigation.

Heard the same bogus rumor around here yesterday. Slightly modified for local conditions, though. It wasn't street gangs, it was drug cartels from across the border.

If you spend some time at Snopes.com you will learn that hoaxers love to play on fear and love to associate Wal-mart with it. If you look at the crime/gang section of the website, every legend that has to do with gang initiation is false.

Some people see these messages and think it might be false but send to all of their friends anyway. "It doesn't hurt to err on the side of caution, right?" Some believe it 100%. "Why would someone's cousin lie to me?" And a many people decide they are just going to avoid Wal-mart for a while, at least until an arrest is made. Of coarse, no arrest is ever made because, no crime ever took place. And all of the hoaxers laugh.
