Yep, most of those "urban legends" are hoaxes, or wannabee gangstas jus' talkin' bad.
But.......
Sometimes, those alleged "initiation rites" have a kernel of truth to them.
Any of you peace officers or retired peace officers here ever heard of Ramond Lewis George and the initiation rites of both The Death Angels of the Nation of Islam, and the Calif. prison gang, BGF (Black Guerrilla Family)??
I have a friend who was involved in a shootout with some young dudes who were initiating a new member into one of the Blood sets (can't remember the gang name of the set, there are so many of them). New member had to kill a white person to become a "made" member of the set.
This time, they selected two wrong guys to murder. Both my friend and his friend -- whom I did not know -- were armed and shot back. Happened about 15 years ago in Pasadena, Calif.
In the early '90s, a cult in Miami, Florida, led by Yahweh ben Yahweh, (bn. Hulon Mitchell, Jr.) was murdering people. Had to do with ritualistic initiation rites into the sect. Just one of the murders, for example, had to do with a once-karate champion being beaten to death with a tire iron... in their "Temple of Love." Several of the women initiates had to take place in the beating.

Don't forget, too, that Charlie Manson's cult group had similar "initiation" rites.
So even though most of the Internet "Look out! They're coming!!" e-mails are hoaxes.... it never hurts to be aware that in a very few cases, there just might be some veractiy to them.
