My Garand (recent CMP arrival) and I went to the range today for the first time. The bolt seems to have a very smooth travel when worked manually, but does not draw back when a round is fired. So the spent round is not ejected, nor the next round loaded into the chamber. The spent casing easily ejects if the op rod is worked manually, does'nt seem to have any binding or resistance. It seems as though the gas operating system is not working. I stripped the rifle and cleaned it upon recieveing it. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The two that jump to mind would be a blocked gas port or a damaged/leaking/missing gas nut.

First remove the gas cyl. plug and look to see that the hole in your gas cyl. is lined up with the gas port in the bottom of the barrel. If this hole is blocked, gas cannot get into the cyl. to push op rod back. If they seem to be aligned properly, remove gas cylinder and check port to be sure it is not plugged. About only other thing I can think of is if the valve in the gas cyl. plug is bent or stuck open allowing gas to be vented forward instead of into gas cyl.

You could have stopped one turn short when you re-assembled your gas cyl. lock causing mis-alignment of the gas port and hole in cyl.

Regards,
hps

If hps1's suggestions don't fix it, have the tip of your op rod and your gas cylinder gauged by a gunsmith. If either one is worn enough to let gasses escape between them, it can affect cycling.
