Glad to hear it, at least from the limited info provided. I hope he wins. Its time anyone who is hassled for exercising their Constitutional rights needs to bare some legal teeth and make this kind of oppression really hurt for the government. The more dollars they lose to cases like this, the more care will be taken to educate LEO's on stuff they are supposed to be knowledgeable about.

Sad thing here, as with other "Govt." screw ups, is that any monies won will come out of the taxpayers pocket as the "Govt." don't have anything but tax money.

I 110% agree that this person should fight back and I applaud their efforts. I also hope that they prevail. That said, I wish it were possible for the idiot(s) responsible to get zapped with the burden of any judgment given.

From the OP's GCO link:
GCO Sues over “Man with a Gun” Incident
GCO filed a federal lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Georgia against the Sheriff of Richmond County and a Richmond County deputy who detained a GCO member and seized his legally-carried pistol.
A right not used is a right that is lost. If OC is legal, we should not be afraid of it out of a fear of harassment. I'm glad that GCO is covering this...

Curious, would a phone call/ email/ letter writing campaign (as in hey Sherrif your boy screwed up so bad people from all over the country know about it) would do anything to help educate the Richmond Co. Sherrif?

A friendly reminder, not about OC laws in Georgia but but the wrongheadedness of bothering someone OBVIOUSLY not a criminal wouldn't be out of order, would it?

If he is anything like the Sheriff in Glynn County, not likely - but it doesn't hurt to try.

Sometimes it takes more than a letter

Essentially the same thing is happening, but to one individual - repeatedly - in Norfolk, Virginia. See http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=398214 for a brief description.

Instead of a letter/email/phone campaign, folks are going in person to confront the governing body to seek redress of a grievance. That generates media coverage, which may or may not influence the governing body and/or the offending agency, but it sure lets the population know how their "masters" view them.

After the public meeting, and after the NPD responds to the latest complaint filed, the victim will decide if another lawsuit is in order.

stay safe.

the glynn county incident was county PD not the sheriffs office. i dont think our sheriffs office even has arrest powers except for warrants here

I had been meaning to join GeorgiaCarry.Org for a while but never got around to it. Finally did at the gun show this past weekend. Seeing this makes me glad I did. This is one organization the stands up for our rights.

twoclones Good for the GCO. Is there a similar organization in Washington State?

Try NorthWest Citizens Defense League. I don't think they're exactly like GCO but it's a start. Good luck.

From the latest GCO email update:

Man With a Gun News

In other news, at the first hint of lawyers, the Richmond County Sheriff's Department miraculously located Mr. Mead's firearm within a few hours (oops, guess it really was not at the GBI after all, as they had claimed) and returned it to him. The lawsuit is moving forward.

It's situations like these that make me wonder if law enforcement think that the 2nd Amendment is just a right in theory but not in practice. Oh yes, people have 2nd Amendment rights, but as soon as a civilian excersies those rights the police get a bug up their butt and swarm all over the person. It's like, yes you can have a gun because it's your right.....but you better not ever let us know you have a gun because it's not REALLY your right in our eyes.

Georgia Carry is very busy in the courts now; between federal judge Marvin Shoob and criminal deputies with a hard on for private citizens trying to protect themselves. This should make for an interesting end for 2009.
