I am thinking about ghost ring sights for a Marlin 336. Anyone use these things? I have in mind those built by XS Sights. I may throw on a scope mounted forward of the receiver in scout scope fashion. Thus the ghost ring could serve as a back-up. XS now has a rail for Marlins which can be used to mount the ghost ring as well as the scope. Anyway, can this all be mounted on existing screw holes with no need for additional drilling and tapping? How accurate are ghost rings for hunting?

"...scope mounted forward of the receiver..." Changes the balance. Ghost rings are nothing more than big peep sights.
Marlins are indeed drilled and tapped for whatever you want to put on.

I have the XS sights on my 336, and they are great. The human eye naturally centers the front sight in the fuzzy rear ring. For .30-30 distances they are ideal. (My personal peeve, but I hate scopes on lever guns.)

I like them so much I added a set to my 39A so that I can practise with the same set-up.

Note that you might need a higher front sight, but don't fret. Contact XS if that is the case and they will fix you up in no time at all.

I have the XS peep on my 1894c and like it. I do wish they would put wings on the peep to protect it. I'm always afraid it's going to get knocked off.

It appears that the XS wings are only available for the 1895 per the pick list on their website. I think the hole pattern might be the same so it might work on my 1894 although an extra $30 bucks seems a little steep for the addition of the wings. Wild West Guns makes a heavy duty peep sight that I'm probably going to consider if I get another Marlin Lever Gun. http://www.wildwestguns.com/Accessories/accessories.html I installed one their happy triggers on my 1894c and it makes a big difference.

It seems like Marlin could make a good business case for a premium line of lever actions with good peep sights, good triggers, and possibly laminated stocks from the factory.

I installed a set of williams peep sights on my wife's Rem. M-141. She removes the screw-in apperture and uses the threaded section as a ghost ring, and can still use the peep at the range to fine-tune the rifle.

I have a wild west guns ghost ring that I will sell ya, cheap. Works perfect.
