I started typing this up in the thread I found about the Gen 5 Glocks, but I figure I probably shouldn't clog up that thread with this.
I attended a Glock day that a local gun store put on a couple weeks ago and got to try out the new gen 5 glocks, both the 19 and the 17. I think they've more or less resolved my biggest complaint with the gen 4s- the trigger. Whatever combination of changes they've made to the trigger components and the firing pin block have made the trigger pull infinitely better in my opinion. I've never gotten used to the gen 4 trigger, but I shot what was (for me) a very nice group with the gen 5 the very first time I picked it up. As part of going to that range day I'm able to buy a new gen 5 from that same store at a "special price" if I buy it before the end of the month. I don't know what that special price is, but I don't imagine the discount is huge. I'm also kind of wondering if we'll see a glock "gen 5.1" or something in the near future that fixes the frame not matching up with the slide, or maybe even removes the magwell cutout.
Based off how well I shot it, plus the fact that I already have a bunch of glock mags and a holster that should fit a gen 5 G19, I was planning on turning around and buying one almost right away, but then the M&P 2.0 compact got announced and now I'm conflicted.
I have an M&P 1.0 full size and I really like it. I always wished S&W would release a version the same size as the G19, since I find that size a perfect balance between shootability and concealability, and now they have. In addition they made the grip texture nice and aggressive, and also improved the trigger. It's also cheaper than the glock (even at it's preorder price at Brownells, and I'm sure that price will drop quickly like the full size M&P did), comes with metal sights straight from the factory, and (at least for me) is much more ergonomic. S&W also has a rebate going on until the end of the month where you get two free mags, a mag loader and some ammo with any new M&P handgun.
All that basically distills down to me wondering which one do you all think I should get? I've got two weeks to decide if I want to take advantage of either that "special price" on the glock or the free mags rebate for the S&W.
For anyone else in the market for one of these, which are you leaning towards and why?
