Im new to the board, but have been shooting handguns and rifles my whole life. Im trying to decide between getting a full sized Glock 17 vs a medium sixed Glock 19.
They would probably see occasional CCW use, but are more likely to spend time as a "truck" gun and a range gun. I might also be interested in shooting some IDPA with it as well. I've shot a Glock 17 before, years ago, and loved it, and Ive owned and shot both Glock 22s and 23s before as well; but never shot a Glock 19 in 9mm.
I already have several fullsized pistols: a 1911 .45, a used expolice Glock 22 .40, and a SigSauer 226 9mm as well as one smaller pistol, a S&W Jframe .38.
Ive usually used the J frame for CCW in a front pocket holster when I carry, but since I have to enter government buildings with metal detectors quite often for work, subsequently, I don't really CCW into the office every day and usually the J frame stays in the truck.
FWIW, I have zero complains about the J frame, other than than it only has 5 rounds. I knew that going in, so not really complaining, just, I think I might want more firepower on the occasions I do CCW.
Im 6ft tall and 230lbs so I think I could conceal most full sized pistols, and have with an IWB holster, with a jacket before during the fall or winter. BUT, I live in the south, and During summer months its too hot to regularly wear a jacket.
Thing is - since this may only be for "occasional" CCW, part of me thinks getting the full sized G17 is the way to go - because it will likely be easier to handle and shoot on the range - and I would almost certianly like using it in IDPA. (Also FYI: Ive shot IDPA before with the Sig 9mm, but didnt always like the double action first shot, and its been finicky lately - which is disturbing in a Sig. Ive also shot IDPA with my Glock .40, but it was a little too snappy for me for accurate multiple shots. Im in the high Marksman/Low Sharpshooter classification range and I shoot for practical practice, not gaming)
Lastly, FWIW Ive had the midsized .40 cal Glock before (23) and part of me liked it alot, but I definitely thought the recoil in it was too snappy to be easy to shoot. Lately my
I do understand that it is entirely likely that I may end up buying both the G19 and the G17 eventually, but I only have the $ to buy one for now. Maybe can get the other next year.
If I could only get one now ... Which one should it be?
Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance for your advice.
