I am looking to get a new house gun and I have narrow it down to either the G22 or the G17. I would get a G21SF but the grip is still too big for me, I like the grip size of the 22 and 17.

Now for the question,

Which has a better stopping power if I was to use a

9mm 124+P Speer GD

165 gr HP 40 S&W.

And the biggest question is why you picked one over the other???????

Please no wars

I am fine or comfortable with either one. They both fit my hand. What I wanted to now is out of boh of these pistols which has a better track record, if any.

They seem to be almost equal, just the forty hits a little harder.

This is why I turned to the experts like you for first hand experience.

Get the 22C and a 9mm conversion barrel and have both:)

From a defensive standpoint I would pick the .40 in 180 gr. But that's only because I like bigger, heavier bullets. My CCW is a G36. Also in my Glock .40s the 180s seems a bit more accurate that the 165s.

The G22 will have a slight advantage over the G17 when using good ammo. in both. I prefer 180gr. in 40 and 147gr. in 9 but 165 and 124 is good also. HST, Ranger T, Gold Dot and Golden Saber would be my choices for carry ammo.

I would skip the compensated barrel, especially for a HD piece. The flash in front of your eyes in a dark room would probably blind you for 10-15 seconds at the worst possible time. That being said, I belive the .40 is a better HD round since there is A. more stopping power B. Lower chance of overpenatration into your neighbor's house. Just MHO.

Ok, many points to address here:

1) Compensated Glocks reduce recoil, but they throw hot gases in your face if you fire from the hip. Bad idea in the defense pistol.
2) Depending on how much you will fire the pistol, 9mm Glocks have about double the service life of the .40 Glocks. 9mms will go about 100k, and .40s will go about 40-50k rounds.
3) The .40S&W bullet will create a larger overall wound.
4) The 9mm is more reliable as its case is slightly tapered allowing for a more supported chamber and more reliable feeding.
5) Stopping power........a handgun punches holes in people, nothing more. Put your shots on target and hope you hit the central nervous system, heart, or aorta.

BTW, I think you should get the G17 with standard pressure Speer Gold Dots in 147gr.

I'd rather not have a compensated pistol if it was intended to be self defense. Too much of a chance of getting dazed while firing it at night. Go with the 9mm. The cost of 9mm to practice with, along with lighter recoil (quicker follow-up shots, if needed), 2 more rounds to the capacity, and the fact that it isn't ported all make the 17 a favorable alternative to the 22C.
