I ended painting an extra house and redoing the linoleum floors (replaced with imitation tile) during my summer vacation before I go back to lawschool and ended up with an $600 bucks in my pocket I didn't plan on getting. This summer has been really good to me money wise and have been planning on making my last couple of firearm purchases before I take a long break from gun buying (already have a couple of rifles, a shotgun, and handguns) until after me and the fiance get married and settle down some three or four years from now (when I have real money and can afford to get into competitive shooting).
So I had originally decided to get a couple of .357 snubbies for concealment versatility and well have decided differently now.
I already shoot .45 ACP out of my Ruger P90(the gun my fiance has all but taken from me) but I don't have any experience with .40.
I've been looking at the Rock Island Compact (looks like an officer to me) and the Glock 23(about as big as my old and gone Arcus 94C). The Rock Island Compact is an officer sized 1911... it's a 1911 and I have wanted a 1911 for some time, plus it's a .45 ACP caliber concealable handgun. Rock Island makes it originally with a 6 round magazine as I understand it but it'll take the usual and larger size 1911 magazines.
The plus sides are that it is a 1911(Rock Island as I understand it makes firearms of comparable quality to that of Springfield, and better than Auto-Ordinance), it's concealable, and .45 ACP, oh and I've found where they can be gotten for under $400(after FFL transfer and shipping) brand-new.
Then there's the Glock 23, compact, generally a 13 round capacity. It's a Glock and their quality as a workhorse is well reputed. While it fires the .40 which can be acquired slightly more cheaply than the .45 ACP, with a quick and none too expensive purchase of an after-market barrel and magazine it can fire 9mm, Sig .357, and .22lr(Advantage Arms, though a good bit more expensive).
I usually buy jeans with large pockets because of my tendency to pocket carry but I've carried my P90 in a IWB holster before plenty of times. I've held Kimber and Para-Ordinance officer sized 1911s and they're recognizably smaller than my old Arcus 94C which I could pocket carry in most of my jeans without a pocket holster without printing(mind you I had to put m wallet in front of it which slowed down draw time) and am figuring the Rock Island Compact with it's 3.5" barrel would be able to pocket carry(mind you I'd get a pocket holster for it if I could find one) easily enough.
The Glock 23 on the other hand could possibly pocket carry but not as easily as the RI. It does have greater mag capacity. It can be converted for 9mm or .22lr which are none too expensive calibers for regular practice or plinking. The trouble though is I'd have to get a LEO trade in to end up just over $400.
It's knawing at me something fierce. I've already decided to get a Taurus 651 snub .357 since I have had a great experience with the 617 snub .357 (the 651 in appreciably smaller to my impression, I'm just waiting for a good steal on the price).
If I could use Fusion officer slides and barrels with the RI where I could fire .40, 9mm, or even 10mm(probaly not but one can dream) maybe even get a .22lr conversion then I'd go with the RI compact in a heartbeat. Has anyone ever swithed out the barrels and slides on a .45 auto framce for a different caliber other than .22lr. Thanks ahead of time.
